Analytical Settings, and Placing Loads

Exercise 10-1
1. Start Revit 2018

2. Open the file Exercise 10-1.rvt

3. Go to 00 Ground floor plan

4. Duplicate it with Detailing, and rename it 00 Ground – Analytical

5. Using Project Browser, right-click the newly created view, and select Apply
Template Properties, when the dialog box comes up select Structural Analytical
Isolated, then click OK

6. Do the same procedure for 01 First floor plan. In this view, you can see the
beams, its start, and its end

7. Duplicate {3D} view, and rename it 3D – Analytical

8. Right-click the newly created view, and select Apply Template Properties, when
the dialog box comes up select Structural Analytical Isolated-3D, then click OK

9. Select one of the floors, and Hide/Category so we can see beams, and columns

10. Zoom to one of the beams, and note the colors at the two ends

11. Start Visibility / Graphics command, and select Analytical Model Categories tab,
click the plus sign at the left of Analytical Beams, to expand it. Change the color
of End Segment, and Start Segment and click on Local Coordinate System

12. If you can’t differentiate colors go to Structural Settings dialog box, select
Analytical Model Settings tab, and look at the bottom of the dialog box, make
sure that Differentiate ends of linear analytical models is turned on

13. Start Load Combination command

14. At the top part, Add a new combination, call it Dead

15. Add another one and call Dead + Live

16. Add a third one and call it Dead + Wind

17. The first combination = 1.4 DL1

18. The second combination = 1.2 DL1 + 1.6 LL1

19. The third combination = 0.9 DL1 + 1.0 WIND1

20. At the lower right corner, click Add, and add two usage, Gravity, and
Combined. Set the first combination to be Gravity, and second and third to be
Combined

21. Click OK to end the command

22. Go to 3D – Analytical view

23. Start Boundary Conditions command

24. Select Line, and Fixed, and select all the lines of the foundation wall, including
the elevator wall (look at the model from bottom)

25. Go to Visibility / Graphics command, and turn off Local Coordinate System for
Analytical Beams

26. There are six columns we need to set boundary conditions for them

27. Look at the model from bottom

28. Start Boundary Conditions command, select Point, and Fixed, locate the end of
the six columns

30. Go to 3D – Analytical view

31. Unhide the Analytical floors (Click Reveal Hidden Elements, point to one of the
floors, click tab until you see Analytical Floors, click, then right-click, and
Unhide Category)

32. Start Loads command

33. Select Hosted Area Load

34. From Properties set Load Case = LL1(2), and Fz1 = - 4.8 KN/m2

35. Select the Slab on grade, then select all the above floors up until the roof (we
are setting the value for all floors just to simplify the process of the exercise)

36. Press [Esc] twice to end the command

37. Go to 06 Roof floor plan view, create a duplicate with detailing. Right-click the
newly created view, and select Apply Template Properties, when the dialog box
comes up select Structural Analytical Isolated, then click OK

38. Hide the floor

39. Start Load command, select Hosted Line Load

40. From Properties set Load Case = WIND1 (3), and set Fy1 = 10 KN/m, and
Fz1 = -10 KN/m, and select the horizontal south beams only

41. Go to 3D – Analytical view and look at your model

42. Save an close the file
