Exceptional service/performance of the highest order

 Without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex


 All persons, regardless of their nationality
 Arts, literature, science, public service, cause of peace and human welfare

Recipients receives:
 A Sanad (certificate)
 Medallion
 Lifetime pension = the salary of the Chief Justice of India
 Travel on ‘Air India’ flight with discount within the country
 Airport + railway priority boarding
 Z+ category security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force
 A place in the official protocol list
 A state funeral with full military honours (India)
