Practice Session-3

1. Figure P1 (a) shows a mechanical vibratory system. When 2 lb of force (step-input) is applied to
the system, the mass oscillates as shown in Figure P1 (b). Determine m, b, and k of the system
from this response curve. The displacement x(t) is measured from the equilibrium position.

2. A thermometer requires 1 minute to indicate 98 % of the response to the step-input. Assuming the
thermometer to be a first-order system, find its time constant.
3. Consider the system shown in Fig. P3. Determine the value of k such that the damping ratio is 0.5.
Then, obtain the values of rise time, delay time, maximum overshoot, and settling time.

4. Write the force equations for the linear translational system shown in Figure P4. Then, obtain the
transfer functions Y1(s)/F(s) and Y2(s)/F(s). Set Mg = 0 for the transfer functions; g is acceleration
due to gravity. Here, K1 and K2 are the spring constants, B denotes damping constant, M is the mass,
f(t) is the input force, and y1(t) and y2(t) are output displacements.

5. The block diagram of a feedback control system is shown in Fig. P5. The error signal is defined to
be e(t).
a. Find the steady-state error of the system in terms of K and Kt when the input is a unit-ramp
function. Give the constraints on the values of K and Kt so that the answer is valid. Let n(t)
= 0 for this part.
b. Find the steady-state value of y(t) when n(t) is a unit-step function. Let r(t) = 0 for this part.
Assume that the system is stable.
