Assignment - I
(EC-1 Regular)

Course No. : SSTM ZG524 / EE ZG523

Course Title : Environmental Statistics No. of Pages = 1
Nature of Assignment : Open Book
Weightage : 15% No. of Questions = 5
Date of Assignment : February 19-28, 2024
Note to Students:
1. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from
a fresh page.
2. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.
3. Each question carries 3 marks.
4. The assignment needs to be submitted on or before 11:59 PM on 28th February 2024.
1. Four red test cricket balls and three white ODI cricket balls are found in Bag A, while
four red test cricket balls and ten white ODI cricket balls are found in Bag B. A coin
toss is held fairly. A ball is selected from Bag A if the coin comes up heads, while a ball
is selected from Bag B if it comes up tails. (i) Determine the probability that a white
ball will be selected. (ii) Assume that the person tossing the coin discloses that a white
ball was selected but not whether it came up heads or tails (keeping the bag from
which a ball was selected secret). What is the probability that Bag B was selected,
meaning the coin turned up tails?

2. It is quite unlikely that a single cycle will be engaged in a collision at a crowded junction
(p = 0.0002). However, a sizable number of cycles—let's say 2000—cross the crossing
at a particular time of day. Given the given circumstances, what is the likelihood that
three or more collisions will take place within that time? Additionally, what is the
probability that there will be no more than one collision?

3. A specific kind of solar water pumping system battery has a guaranteed 1200 day
assured average life, with a 150 day standard deviation. To ensure that 95% of the
batteries do not fall short of the guaranteed average by more than 3.5%, it is decided
to sample the output. Find the minimum sample size, applying the Central Limit
Theorem.

4. Let X and Y be two continuous random variables with joint probability density function
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑐𝑥 2 (𝑥 − 𝑦), 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2, −𝑥 ≤ 𝑦 ≤ 𝑥; 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 0, 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
(a) Evaluate c, (b) find 𝑓(𝑥), (c) find 𝑓(𝑦|𝑥).

5. A random variable X follows a normal distribution such that 𝑃[9.6 ≤ 𝑋 ≤ 13.8] =

0.7008 and 𝑃[𝑋 ≥ 9.6] = 0.8159. Find mean and variance of the random variable X.
