SUPERLATIVES

• Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper or lower limit of a quality.
• They are used in sentences where a person, an animal, or thing is compared to a group of objects, in this
pattern:

To form superlatives with short adjectives, use:

NOUN VERB SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE NOUN OBJECT


(SUBJECT) ONE-SYLLABLE
My house is The largest In our neighborhood.
This box Is The smallest I’ve ever seen.
Your dogs Are The fastest Of any dog in the race.

To form superlatives with long adjectives, use:

THE MOST /THE LEAST + long adjective + complement.

Rachel is the most intelligent student in the class.

Geoffrey is the most aggressive student in my neighborhood.

THE LEAST + long adjective + complement.

April is the least intelligent in the school.

My mom is the least courageous person in my family.

SPELLING Rules for superlative.

a. We use the -est suffix with one syllable adjectives and we add the before the adjective.

small -> the smallest -> Joe is the smallest grandson in his family.

b. Adjectives ending in -e add -st

Nice -> the nicest -> Megan is the nicest girl I’ve ever known.

c. Adjectives ending with one consonant + one vowel + one consonant double the final consonant and add -est.

Big -> the biggest -> My cat is the biggest in my town.

d. Two syllable adjectives ending with consonant + -y we change -y for -I and add est

Happy -> the happiest → Mario was the happiest in my birthday party.

e. Three or more syllable adjectives we use the word the most or the least before the adjective.
Popular → the most popular / the least popular → Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are the most popular football players in
the world.

Some adjectives have irregular superlative form


Bad → worst good → best far → furthest / farthest.
