1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Organizational background

Shinning Hopes for Communities (SHOFCO) is a grassroots movement based in
Nairobi Kenya urban slums in Kibera as a headquarter hence providing services,
community platforms and education and leadership development for women and girls.
It serves more than 350000 slums in Kenyan cities.

Kennedy Odede, who is the CEO, grew up in Kibera where he experienced extreme
poverty, violence, lack of opportunity, and deep gender inequality. It is because of
this experience that in 2004, with just 20cents and a soccer ball, he started SHOFCO
as a movement for the empowerment of urban youth, women, and girls. Odede was
inspired by activists Martin Luther Kings Jr., Marcus Garvey, and Nelson Mandela, as
well as by women like his mother who suffered consistent abuse but remained strong
and driven.

In 2007, Odede met Jessica Posner, an American college student who was studying
abroad in Kenya. Together they created the model that SHOFCO uses today. In 2009,
Odede and Posner built the Kibera School for girls, a landmark achievement in the
history of the organization that acted as a base for their female empowerment
programme. SHOFCO has expanded their services to include free medical clinics, an
innovative aerial clean water system, public toilets, an internet cafe, as well as
economic and community empowerment programs. The aerial water piping system
was the first of its kind in Kenya and is in both Kibera and Mathare

In September 2014, Shining Hopes for Communities officially opened SHOFCO -

Mathare in Nairobi’s second largest slum, Mathare. This site includes another school
for girls, a free healthcare clinic and community and economic empowerment
programs. SHOFCO has continued to expand and now operates in more than 10 slums
across Kenya in almost every county.

In the year 2019, SHOFCO was officially opened in Kisumu County’s largest slum
Obunga. This was the only office which served its clients in the county and western
part of Kenya. The offices were later built in several slums in the county such as
Nyalenda A, Nyalenda B, Manyatta B, Manyatta A and other slums. The organization
has been initially spread in almost all the counties in Kenya.

The Organization promote peace and cohesion, it enhances good leadership and
governance, economic empowerment, and social welfare. These are the main
prospects. It offers so many departments such as sustainable livelihood, healthcare,
education, welfare, Sacco, gender, and mental health.

In each department, there are several activities offered, in sustainable livelihood, it

deals with women empowerment, in gender department it deals with gender-based
violence and child abuse, when it comes to education system, it offers full scholarship
to the TVETS students for short courses. It also offers free library to the school going
pupils and students. In SUN welfare department, it deals with the members by
standing with them in case of death. They offer respective services to the deceased
members.

VISION: To create an organization that is safe for children, where all efforts are
made to prevent child abuse

documentation hence cannot be written in pace.

Implementing report recommendation is difficult - This is because the scopes and objectives are
not well defined, and the logical and structured framework are not used hence implementation
becomes difficult.

CHAPTER THREE

3 SELF ANALYSIS OF KNOWLEDGE

3.1 Achievement
I managed to convince some of the individuals to join the SUN welfare. I also mobilized groups
on many occasions especially on field work to be registered or to be part of SHOFCO. I did this
by explaining more about SHOFCO in details to be more understandable. I also managed to
convince my clients who came in the office for more enquiries about the organization.
Furthermore, I managed to mobilize youths for youth voice training which is normally done over
the weekends by the youth representative at ward level.
With assistance from the site coordinator, I was able to grow in terms of knowledge and skills.
She was able to guide me in what I was doing and whenever I made a mistake, she would correct
me hence enabling me to grow in an upright posture.

I was also able to be familiarize with the machines that I was not able to use. These machines are
such as the printer, the photocopying machines, and laptops. I was able to know the benefit of
joining a non-profitable organization and the benefits they bring to the society.
3.2 Specific skills gained.
Communication skills _ Through industrial attachment in an organization, I gained skills to
communicate in a group with different people and pass relevant information to be more
understandable.
Confidentiality. I can be able to stand in front of audience with confidence without fear and shy
while passing the information.
Creative skills. In regarding to my creativity which I gained within the organization, I can use it
to make liquid soap, shampoo, and Downey. I gained the creativity through sweep (SHOFCO
women empowerment) training under sustainable livelihood department.
Good leadership and government skills. During my field walk on different groups I gained some
skills and qualities of good leadership governance.
3.3Comparison with the content learnt in class.
According to my observation, field work is more fruitful than what is learnt in class.

This is because, it enables us to do it practically and know what your strengths and weakness is.
This is only identified when you are in your theoretical class.

Practicum lessons are better than class lessons because it enables us to learn more things and
identify other new ideas apart from what we are being taught in class. This is because, one visits
new places and get new ideas other than that which is limited in the theoretical part in class.

Practicum content is more valuable than that learnt in class because you get different people who
will be able to teach you more of what you have learnt in class since they have more experience
in that field. This will enable a student to come out a successful worker in future.

In school, I learnt through lecturers which were theories in most cases. We were being taught
tactics to handle cases in theory form. This is different as compared to what I learnt in
attachment. In attachment, I did it practically. I can be able to apply what I learnt in school
practically. I also shared my knowledge and skills with the community members.
3.4General Experience.
In my general experience, I feel confident that social work is a good course since it is entailed at
bringing a positive change in the community.

I have been able to be familiarized with what is happening in my community, the challenges they
face and what is to be done in order to be able to grow and be a benefactor of the community.

I have also gained confidence in my course and realize that am the change agent of my
community and accept to be a social worker officer of my community.

They all have one vision, mission and objective hence enabling them to achieve their goals as an
organization.
3.5 Challenges faced/ experienced.
I faced so many challenges especially on my field work.

Resistant from other individuals. Some group members failed to understand our trainings due to
the insight from some of the defaultants. They spread propaganda about the organization.

Time consciousness. Concerning the time management, some members appear at the venue very
late. This leads to lack of proper communication hence lack know how about the organization
hence leading to rumors.

Absentism. Due to commitment, some of the members may not be able to present themselves in
the venue. A times, there were more absentees as compared to those who were present. This was
due to the personal scheduled programs. Such absentees lacked information about the
organization.

Weather condition. Some areas are very pathetic especially when it rains. The area become flood
and muddy hence difficult when trekking to the specific venue. This was leading to low turnout
of the trainees.
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 SUMMARY

4.1 Attachment Summary

Based on the above report and skills gained I believe that I will be in regarding to my future
career. My work-related learning period at the SHOFCO really transformed me into a
responsible student who is capable of completely working in an industry. I was able to
familiarize myself with new ideas and aspects in the organization. I have now finalized my
attachment period; I will be able to balance between theories I learnt at school with the practical
experience that I gained in the organization.

The theory that I learnt at school has been transformed to available resource during my
attachment period at SHOFCO. I have also been transformed personally by the challenges I
faced during the attachment period. I am critically able to analyze solutions and make rational
decisions. I am now capable to be a leader hence I acquired good leadership skills.

I can also manage to accomplish my duties as directed by my supervisor without strict

supervision. I farther took advise from the staffs positively
4.2 Conclusion
In conclusion, the student benefited a lot in the field attachment in a way that the student
managed to apply the theoretical knowledge from the school in to practice through the many
activities the attaché was obligated to do.

The attaché improved the skills like interpersonal, listening, presentation skills, acting freely
around people, typing skills, data analysis and many organizational skills. The student learnt
many different ideas from the staffs and other attachés, and this contributed to a lot on the
knowledge and experiences I gained.

Finally, attachment was fun and therefore the attachees would encourage the organization to
continue giving students the opportunity to do their academic requirement of attachment from
their organization.
4.3 Recommendation
To the organization

Serious supervision to the workers and attachees. The organization should increase and ensure
more supervision over the employees to work effectively. This is done through submission of
weekly plan or report to ensure that there is proper mobilization of the individuals or groups.

More attachment opportunities to students. The organization should continue giving more
attachment opportunities to students as this will provide better opportunity for student to apply
their theoretical knowledge in world problem.

The organization should also more electronic machineries such as laptops and printers to
increase the working rate.
