• A literature review is an overview of existing literature (books, articles, dissertations,
conference proceedings, and other sources) in a particular scholarly area. It is a systematic
and critical analysis of the literature on a specific topic.
• A good literature review doesn’t just summarize sources—it analyses, synthesizes, and
critically evaluates to give a clear picture of the state of knowledge on the subject.
Examples of Literature Review:
a. Literature review of a research proposal on cyberbullying-
Cyberbullying is something that has become a new social phenomenon today. Faucher, Jackson,
and Cassidy (2014) performed a study on 1925 students across four Canadian universities that
found 24.1 per cent of students had been victims of cyberbullying over the last twelve months.
b. Literature review of a research proposal on Virginia’s Massive Resistance 1950s
The first studies of Virginia’s massive resistance, and those upon which all other research
on the subject are Benjamin Muse’s Virginia’s Massive Resistance and Robbins L.
Gates’s The Making of Massive Resistance, was first published in 1961 and 1962, respectively.
Relying mainly on primary documents and interviews, these classic accounts reveal the key facts
of the ordeal but offer little interpretation of the situation, lacking the necessary historical
hindsight to do so. (THIS IS CRITICAL ANALYSIS)

5. Research Questions/Research Hypothesis/Thesis Statement/Problem statement - It

provides a clear and concise description of the issues that need to be addressed - What is the
specific problem in that research area that you will address. You should formulate these clearly,
giving an explanation as to what problems and issues are to be explored and why they are
worth exploring.
• A hypothesis is a single-sentence answer to the Key Inquiry Question that clearly
states what your entire essay is going to argue.
For example –
Why the indigenous people of Australia were treated as second–class citizens until the 1960s by
the denial of basic political rights by the State and Federal Government?

(Before formulating your research hypothesis, read about the topic of interest to you.
From your reading, which may include articles, books and/or cases, you should gain
sufficient information about your topic that will enable you to narrow or limit it and
express it as a research question. The research question flows from the topic that you
are considering. The research question, when stated as one sentence, is your Research
Hypothesis.)

6. Methodology -
• Research methodology defines the research methods - What to do and how to
solve the problem and achieve proposed objectives?
• Which research methods (e.g., survey, case study …) will be used?
• Attach a project schedule table, How long it will take to do the research.
7. Bibliography-
