SNAPSHOT SHOWING FEM MODEL FOR DESIGN OF DECK SLAB

Size in mm Vol Density Weight

B H m3 kN/m3 kN/m2
Deck Slab self weight 1000.0 225.0 0.23 25.0 5.6 kN/m2
Deck Sheet Self weight 0.15 kN/m2
Total self-wt of Deck Slab & Sheet 5.78 kN/m2

B LIve Load (LL)

Live load on Deck Slab 5.0 kN/m2

C Vehicular Load
Vehicular Load is considered as per IRC 6 Class B
Note: As per IRC 6, Class B loading pertains to a multi-axle vehicle train having 8 axles. However, actual vechicle which is
expected to travel on the bridge will have only 2 axles. Thefore the highest 2 axle loads as specified in Class B loading (6.8
Tons & 4.1 Tons) have been used for design of this bridge.
Centre to Centre distance between frames = L = 12000 mm
As per IRC impact factor = 4.5/(6+L) = 1.25
Wheel base = 1800 mm
Distance between axles = 3200 mm
Load on rear axle as per IRC 6 = 68.0 kN
Load Per wheel = 34.0 kN
Design Load Per wheel =1.25 x Load per wheel = 42.50 kN
Contact Area of wheel with Deck Slab = 200 x 380 mm
Pressure = Design Load / Contact Area = 559 kN/m2 (this load is applied in STAAD)

Load on Front Axle = 41.0 kN

Load Per wheel = 20.5 kN
Design Load Per wheel =1.25 x Load per wheel = 25.6 kN
Contact Area of wheel with Deck Slab = 150 x 300 mm
Pressure on Contact area = 42.5/(0.38 x 0.20) = 569 kN/m2 (this load is applied in STAAD)
Load due to floor finishing = 0 kN/m2

Since Deck slab is spanning in shorter direction, as such check for various positions of vehicle is not necessary.
Even the, to determine critical loading condition, location of vehicle has been considered at 2 different locations
1) Vehicle at Center of span (Load Case 9: TR-1)
2) Vehicle near edge of span (Load Case 10: TR-2)

NOTES:
1 -ve Moment in STAAD indicates Tension on top face of slab when Local Z axis of plate points towards sky

2 Local X axis of Plates are parallel to Short Direction. Hence, reinforcement along X axis corresponds
Short direcn Bending. Also, in plane stresses along X direction Sx (if +ve) correspond to horizontal axial tension in slab.

3 Local Y axis of Plates are parallel to Longer Direction. Hence, reinforcement along Y axis corresponds
Longer direction Bending.
