STATISTICS
Welcome to the
Wonderful World of
STATISTICS!
STATISTICS
• It is a branch of mathematics that deals with the
scientific collection, organization, presentation,
analysis, and interpretation of data in order to
obtain useful and meaningful information.

COLLECTION OF DATA
• It is the process of gathering numerical
information. Methods of gathering pertinent
information include interview, questionnaire,
experiments, observation and documentary
analysis.
ORGANIZATION /
PRESENTATION OF DATA
• It refers to the organization of data into
tables, graphs or charts, so that logical and
statistical conclusions can be derived from
the collected measurements.
ANALYSIS OF DATA

• It is a procedure of performing various statistical

operations.
• It also refers to the activity of describing the
properties or behavior of the data or the possible
correlation of different quantities or variables.
INTERPRETATION OF DATA

• It is the process of reviewing data and

arriving at relevant conclusions using
various analytical research methods.
NATURE OF STATISTICS

Statistics has already grown into a field

that is varied and extensive. It may
classify into two sub-areas:
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

• It refers to the field of statistics that includes the

methods of collecting, classifying, graphing, and
averaging data with the objective of simply
describing the properties or characteristics of the
data on hand.
INFERENTIAL STATISTICS

• It demands a somewhat higher degree of critical

judgment and advanced mathematical models. It
is concerned with drawing of conclusions or
generalizations from organized data.
Example:
You might stand in a mall and ask a sample of 100
people if they like shopping at H&M. You could make a
bar chart of yes or no answers (that would be
descriptive statistics) or you could use your research
(and inferential statistics) to reason that around 75-80%
of the population (all shoppers in all malls) like
shopping at H&M.

Descriptive Statistics
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
OR INFERENTIAL STATISTICS?

Mr. Rivera wants to know who

among her students like Math.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
OR INFERENTIAL STATISTICS?

An ecologist says that the fish in a

certain pond has 400 units of mercury
on the average.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
OR INFERENTIAL STATISTICS?

Five percent of all suicides are

committed by teenagers.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
OR INFERENTIAL STATISTICS?

The average age of the students

in a statistics class is 13 years.
DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
OR INFERENTIAL STATISTICS?

Do girls learn to speak at an

earlier age than boys?
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

1. A badminton player wants to

know his average score for the past
10 games.
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

2. Dustin wants to determine the

variability of his six exam scores in
Statistics.
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

3. Based on last year’s electricity bills, Mrs. JT would

like to forecast the average monthly electricity bill
she will pay for the next year based on her average
monthly bill in the past year.
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

4. Efren “Bata” Reyes wants to estimate his chance of

winning in the next World Championship game in
Billiards based on the average scores last championship
and the averages of the competing players.
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.

5. Mrs. Josefina wants to determine the

proportion spent on transportation during the
past four months using the daily records of
expenditures that she keeps.

the average lifetime of batteries by testing a
sample of 50 batteries.

7. A shipping company wishes to estimate the

number of passengers travelling via their ships
next year using their data on the number of
passengers in the past three years.
ACTIVITY #2
For each of the following statements below, decide whether it
belongs to the field of descriptive statistics or inferential statistics.
