Contingency theory-
In Contingency theory of leadership, the success of the
leader is a function of various contingencies in the form
of subordinate, task, and/or group variables. The
Leaders who are very effective at one place and time
may become unsuccessful either when transplanted to
another situation or when the factors around them
change.
This helps to explain how some leaders who seem for
a while to have the 'Midas touch' suddenly appear to go off
the boil and make very unsuccessful decisions.
Contingency Theories
of Leadership
 Modern leadership theories reflect a contingency perspective
which attempts to match situational demands with appropriate
leader behaviors.

"When and under what circumstances is a

particular leadership style preferable to others?"

EXAMPLE

Let’s say you will be promoted as School Head at one of the busiest and
performing school in NCR. Let’s say your dominant leadership style is
relationship-oriented and the factors that determine the work situation you
will find yourself in are as follows:
•Leader-Member relations will be low—at least at first—because the
employees do not know you and do not know what you are all
about. Also, leader-member relations may remain toward the low end
even with time because the school tend to have relatively high turnover
rates. You are, therefore, having to essentially build trust with new
employees on an ongoing basis.
•The task-structure is high because the school already established has
clear processes and policies in place (i.e. highly standardized).
•You also have high position power, with the formal authority to hire,
reward, discipline, and fire employees within legal and ethical parameters.
Okay, according to Fiedler’s Contingency Theory of
Leadership, is your relationship-oriented style a good
match for this situation? In other words, all other things
being equal, should you take the job?

Answer: Yes, because it has mixed

favorableness and a situation with mixed
favorableness matches best with a relationship-
oriented style.
