Occupational Health and Safety Act: OHS Act Introduction to the OHS Act. Rules applicable to farm safety
and the safe handling of machines.
If a tractor is operated on a slope, care must be taken that the tractor does not overturn due to a too steep
slope.
Care must be taken that a tractor does not fall over when pulling heavy objects.
Prevent animals and people from coming into contact with mixers, pulleys, tyres, blades and chains when
using harvesters, hammer mills, cutting machines etc.
Avoid working below power lines.
Always switch off the machine and wait until it has stopped completely before repair or maintenance

performed.
Do not wear loose clothing that can get caught in machinery. Similarly, long hair should be tied back or kept
under a cap.
Use safety equipment. Certain tasks require wearing glasses to protect vision and
earplugs to protect hearing. People working near noisy equipment run the risk of
developing permanent hearing loss due to exposure to loud noise.
Never work under raised mobile equipment, loads or spare parts. Block or support any lift
equipment when someone is working on or under it.
Get a qualified person who regularly inspects your mobile equipment. If a defect is found,
people at risk must be protected and the problem must be repaired before the equipment can be used again.
Keep an inspection and maintenance register of services to the equipment
Visually inspect the equipment before switching it on.
Check the surrounding area to make sure no one can be injured when the equipment is
switched on or off.
