Tens of thousands of people across the South-East of reported feeling a strong earthquake on
Wednesday morning (22/09/2021). Geoscience Australia said that a 5.9 magnitude struck at 9:15 am
with a 4.0 magnitude aftershock about 15 minutes later. The epicentre was near the town of
Mansfield, about 100km away from Melbourne Victoria. It struck at a depth of 10 metres. The
Bureau of Meteorology said that there is no tsunami threat but there could be more aftershocks.
Around 35,000 house lost power, mainly in the northern suburbs OF Melbourne, but now most
houses have their power back on again. Many buildings in Chapel Street in Melbourne were
damaged and debris was spread all over the road.
There were also tremors as far as Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide but no major damage was reported.
The premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews has contacted the Prime Minister and the prime minister
promised assistance if needed.
