Lesson Title: Introduction to Basic Music Notation

Objectives:

- Identify and name the basic music notes (whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, and

sixteenth note).

- Understand the concept of time signature and its significance in music.

- Demonstrate the ability to read and write basic rhythms using music notation.

- Apply the knowledge of basic music notation in playing simple musical pieces.

Subject Matter:

- Introduction to basic music notation symbols and their corresponding durations.

- Time signature: understanding the top and bottom numbers and their relation to the rhythm of a

musical piece.

Learning Activities:

1. Warm-up activity: Play a simple rhythm using clapping or body percussion and have students

identify the duration of each beat.

2. Introduction to basic music notes: Show visuals and examples of whole notes, half notes,

quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. Discuss their durations and how they are

represented in music notation.

3. Time signature explanation: Explain the concept of time signature using visuals and examples.

Discuss the top and bottom numbers and their significance in determining the rhythm of a

musical piece.
4. Practice reading and writing rhythms: Provide worksheets or flashcards with various rhythms

using the basic music notes. Have students practice clapping or playing the rhythms and writing

them using music notation.

5. Application: Divide students into small groups and give each group a simple musical piece

written in music notation. Instruct them to practice and perform the piece using the correct

rhythm and time signature.
