Chapter 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
In an era marked by technological advancements and evolving security threats,

safeguarding industrial settings has become paramount for ensuring operational

continuity and protecting valuable assets. Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel Inc., like

many educational institutions, is not immune to the challenges posed by security

vulnerabilities within its industrial infrastructure. Recognizing the critical importance of

enhancing security measures, this research delves into comprehensive strategies

tailored specifically for Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel Inc. to fortify its industrial

security framework.

Industrial settings encompass a wide array of facilities, from manufacturing plants

to research laboratories, each presenting unique security concerns. Threats ranging

from theft and vandalism to sabotage and cyber attacks demand a multifaceted

approach to security, integrating physical, technological, and procedural elements.

Failure to adequately address these threats not only jeopardizes the safety of personnel

and assets but also undermines the institution's reputation and financial stability.

Amidst these challenges, the imperative for Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel Inc.

to proactively bolster its security measures cannot be overstated. However, the task of

devising effective strategies requires a nuanced understanding of the institution's

operational dynamics, existing security infrastructure, regulatory requirements, and

budgetary constraints. Moreover, any proposed solutions must strike a delicate balance

between enhancing security and minimizing disruptions to daily operations.

This research paper aims to provide actionable insights and practical

recommendations for Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel Inc. to strengthen its industrial

security posture. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of relevant literature, case

studies, and industry best practices, the proposed strategies encompass a spectrum of

initiatives encompassing physical access controls, surveillance systems, cybersecurity

protocols, employee training, and crisis management procedures. By adopting a holistic

approach that addresses both internal and external threats, Colegio de San Gabriel

Arcangel Inc. can fortify its defenses and mitigate the risk of security breaches.

Furthermore, the implementation of robust security measures not only serves to

protect the institution's assets but also fosters a culture of safety and accountability

among staff and students. By prioritizing security, Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel Inc.

demonstrates its commitment to the well-being of its community and its resilience in the

face of evolving threats.

In conclusion, this research endeavors to provide Colegio de San Gabriel

Brooks, D.j. 2013., M. Coole, and P. Haskell-2018 Intelligent Buildings (IB) have

become increasing popular during the past decade, driven through the need to reduce

energy, have more reactive and safer buildings, and increase productivity. IB integrate

many systems that were in the past isolated from each other, including fire and life

safety, HVAC, lighting, security, etc. Facilities contain commercial-in-confidence material

and other valued assets; however, IB are integrated through open and common data

communication protocols and hardware, leaving facilities exposed to external and

internal threats. The study presents an investigation into IB, based on a defeat

evaluation methodology. IB vulnerabilities considered two areas, namely physical and

software vulnerabilities. Physical hardware vulnerabilities included physical access to the

automation devices or workstations, communication networks, wiretapping, remote

connectivity, foreign devices and local field programming. Software vulnerabilities

included common connectivity protocols, restricted encryption and limited security

considerations. These vulnerabilities could result in such attacks as denial of service,

covert facility entry or espionage. IB risks are contextual, aligned with the facility’s threat

exposure; nevertheless, there are generic mitigation strategies that can be taken to

protect IB systems. Protection includes situational threat driven security risk

management, understanding system criticalities, integration of departments, a degree of

network isolation and greater awareness.

As organizational security breaches increase, so too does the need to fully

understand the human factors that lead to these breaches and take the necessary steps

to minimize threats. The present study evaluates how three sets of employee

characteristics (demographic, company-specific, and skills-based) predict an employee's

likelihood of becoming a security breach victim. In order to move beyond traditional

evaluations of security threats, which generally consider security threats individually,

analyses in this paper approach security vulnerability from a more holistic approach to

analyze four risk categories concurrently: phishing, passwords, bring your own device

(BYOD), and company-supplied laptops. Findings from a survey of 250 employees at a

medium-sized American information technology (IT) consulting firm identify higher-risk

employees across the four risk areas and provide new insights into the challenges

organizations face when trying to ensure the protection of company data.

Theoretical Framework

This study is firstly anchored on the theory Organizational Vulnerability Theory

This theory focuses on understanding how organizations become vulnerable to various threats and

risks, including security breaches. It emphasizes factors such as organizational structure, culture,

4
METRO MANILA COLLEGE GRADUATE SCHOOL

Novaliches, Quezon City, Philippines

and decision-making processes that may contribute to vulnerabilities. In the context of industrial

security, organizational vulnerabilities could stem from weaknesses in security policies,

inadequate training of personnel, or insufficient investment in security measures. By examining

how institutional factors shape organizational vulnerabilities, researchers can identify strategies to

strengthen security resilience within industrial settings.

Securitization theory explores how certain issues or phenomena are constructed as

security threats through discursive practices and institutional processes. In the context of

industrial security, this theory could be applied to understand how vulnerabilities are framed and

addressed within institutional contexts. For example, securitization processes may involve the

designation of certain industrial assets or infrastructure as critical to national security, leading to

the implementation of specific security measures and regulations. Understanding the dynamics of

securitization can shed light on how institutional responses to security vulnerabilities are shaped

and enacted within industrial sectors.

Organizational culture theory emphasizes the shared beliefs, values, and norms that shape

behavior within organizations. In the context of institutional vulnerabilities, organizational culture

can influence employees' attitudes towards security practices and their willingness to adhere to

security protocols. A strong security culture that prioritizes vigilance, accountability, and

continuous training can help mitigate human-related vulnerabilities by fostering a collective sense

of responsibility for security within the institution. Conversely, a weak or toxic organizational

culture may contribute to complacency, negligence, or resistance to security measures, increasing

the organization's vulnerability to security breaches.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework shows the input-process-output (IPO) model

that served as the guide in the formulation of the research questions and hypotheses.
