General Guidelines

Caterpillar Fuel Injection Systems

Overview

The purpose of a fuel injection system is to deliver the right amount of fuel to each of the cylinders at the right time
to ensure optimum combustion and power. Over the years, fuel injection systems have transitioned through three
main generations of technology:

• The Mechanical Fuel Injection system, also known as pump-line-nozzle or simply pump and lines, is a basic
non-electronic design that uses a fuel pump and mechanical governor to deliver pressurized fuel in metered
amounts to the injector nozzles.

• Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) eliminates the governor, develops high fuel pressure at each injector (mechanically
or hydraulically), and then triggers injection electronically.

• Common Rail systems maintain high fuel pressure full-time, from the fuel pump to the injectors, and triggers
each individual injector electronically, often delivering multiple injections to optimize each combustion event.

The specifications and arrange of Fuel Injection Systems are listed in a standardized format found in Service
Information System (SIS 2.0).

Warranty Issues

In connection with multiple cases of early failures of injectors, when the spare parts were sold and installed
without dealer service. The factory numbers and trims* should be filled in the attached form 1.02. Then the form
1.02 with photos of number on injectors should be attached to the SAP portal, before transmitting to customer.

The form 1.02 with attached photos meant to recognize that the certain group of failed injectors identify with
exact batch. In case of warranty claims, when the form 1.02 with attached photos will be missing from the SAP
database. Each warranty case will be considered personally as part of a discussion between the divisions.
