Chem 22-23 S3 Exam2
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
(2) There are TWO sections, A and B, in this Paper. Answer ALL questions in each section.
You are advised to finish Section A in about 18 minutes.
(3) Section A consists of multiple-choice questions in this question paper, while Section B
contains conventional questions printed separately in Question-Answer Book B.
(4) Answers to Section A should be marked on the Multiple-choice Answer Sheet while
answers to Section B should be written in the spaces provided in Question-Answer Book
B. The Answer Sheet for Section A and the Question-Answer Book for Section B
must be handed in separately at the end of the examination.
(5) A Periodic Table is printed on page 2. Atomic numbers and relative atomic masses of
elements can be obtained from the Periodic Table.
___________________________________________________________________________
(1) Read carefully the instructions of the Answer Sheet. After the announcement of the start
of the examination, write your name, class, class number and registration numbers and
mark the corresponding boxes.
(2) When told to open this book, you should check that all the questions are there. Look for
the words ‘END OF SECTION A’ after the last question.
(4) ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS. You are advised to use an HB pencil to mark all the
answers on the Answer Sheet, so that wrong marks can be completely erased with a
clean rubber. You must mark the answers clearly; otherwise you will lose marks if the
answers cannot be captured.
(5) You should mark only ONE answer for each question. If you mark more than one answer,
you will receive NO MARKS for that question.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SECTION B
(4) An asterisk (*) has been put next to the questions Total
where one mark will be awarded for effective
communication.
1. The scientist Bohr suggested that, in an atom, electrons move in certain fixed electron shells
surrounding the nucleus. The total number of electrons in an atom equals to the atomic
number of the atom. The way how the electrons are arranged in these electron shells is
known as the electronic arrangement.
(a) What is the meaning of the term ‘atomic number’ of an atom? Explain why the total
number of electrons in an atom equals to its atomic number.
(2 marks)
(b) If n is the electron shell number, what is the maximum number of electrons that the
electron shell can hold? (Express your answer in terms of n.)
Answers written in the margins will not be marked

2. Boron (B) has two naturally occurring isotopes, B-x and B-11.
(a) What is the meaning of the term ‘isotopes’?
Answers written in the margins will not be marked
(1 mark)
(c) The percentage abundance of the B-x isotope is 20.0 %. Based on the relative atomic
mass given in the Periodic Table, calculate the value of x.

(d) The B-11 isotope reacts with chlorine readily. Explain whether the B-x isotope reacts
in the same way.
