INTERNET OF THINGS (IoT) AND ITS CHALLENGES FOR ITS USABILITIES AT

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST (UCC)

Introduction: The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in educational institutions

has transformed traditional campus environments, promising enhanced efficiency, connectivity,

and innovation. However, the implementation of IoT in academic settings presents unique

challenges that require careful consideration and strategic planning, university of Cape Coast, as a

prominent institution of higher learning faces its own set of challenges in leveraging IoT to

enhance usability and support its educational mission. This study aims to explore the specific

challenges encountered in implementing and utilizing IoT technologies at University of Cape

Coast, assess stakeholders’ perceptions of IoT usability on campus, and propose strategies for

addressing these challenges to maximize the potential benefits of IoT in the university

environment. By examining the intersection of IoT technology and higher education UCC, this

research seeks to contribute valuable insights and recommendations to inform future IoT initiatives

and improve the overall usability and effectiveness of technology-enhanced learning environment.
Research Questions:

1. What are the specific challenges encountered in the implementation and usability of

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies at University of Cape Coast?

2. How do stakeholders, including students and administrative staff perceive the usability and

effectiveness of IoT solutions on campus?

3. What strategies can be employed to address the identified challenges and enhance the

usability of IoT technologies at university of Cape Coast?

Objectives of the study:

1. To identify and analyse the key challenges faced in implementing IoT technologies and

ensuring their usability at UCC.

2. To assess the perception and experiences of students and administrative staff regarding the

usability and effectiveness of existing IoT solution on campus.

3. To propose recommendations and strategies aimed at addressing the identified challenges

and improving the usability of IoT technologies at UCC with the goal of enhancing campus

experiences and supporting the university’s educational mission.

Methodology: This Study will use a quantitative research design, using a survey questionnaire to

collect data from a sample of 300 respondents from the age of 18 and above. The survey

questionnaire will include a standardised measures to assess the significant attention Internet of

Things (IoT) has garnered over the years, its challenges and strategies that can be adopted to

overcome the underlined challenges. Participants will be selected from students and staff of UCC
Data Analysis: This study uses frequency count, percentages, bar chart, pie chart and a descriptive

statistic such as measure of central tendency (Mean, Median and Mode) as statistical tools for the

analysis.

Expected Results: Internet of things (IoT) is a global network of interconnected machines and

devices, perceived as a significant area of future innovation. While businesses widely adopt IoT,

its patronage remains low in University of Cape Coast campus. Challenges include security,

privacy, data convergence, interoperability, and uncertain business models.

Implications: The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies at University of Cape Coast

holds significant implications for campus life and academic endeavors. While IoT implementation

promises to enhance campus experiences, improve resources management, and create more

interactive learning environments, it also brings forth challenges. These challenges include

addressing data security and privacy concerns, overcoming infrastructure and technical hurdles,

and ensuring ethical and social considerations are met. To successfully navigate these challenges,

the university must prioritize training and capacity building, foster collaboration with industry

partners and academic institutions, and remain vigilant in addressing the ethical implications of

IoT adoption. By doing so, University of Cape Coast can leverage IoT technology to enhance

usability, foster innovation, and advance its education mission.
