There are areas in the English language usage
where many people including, academics, and
educators, disagree and have been unable to
reach a goal. Usage is a matter of convention, and
it can change over time, and will be contested
sometimes. Using references like Merriam-
Websters Dictionary of English usage or Garners
Modern American English can help understand
more about contested words, and it can help us
figure out if we are using them in the correct way.
Word usage
The understatement of a word can change over the time,
and the context is what will influence the idea of words. And
if you use a specific word, in a determined context, it can
influence how people see the word.
A clear example is the term “illegal immigrant” This term is
often seen as a politically charged and offensive way to
refer to people who have crossed into a country without
permission. The term is contested because it implies that
the individual is a criminal, when in many cases they are
simply seeking a better life. Many people prefer to use the
term *undocumented immigrant* instead, as this more
accurately reflects the legal status of the individual.
