Introduction

Michael Robinson also known as “ M.R”. is a man of undeniable charm and talent and is
known as one of St.Lucia’s most prominent singer-songwriters and music producers.
Michael Robinson is an amazing vocalist who brings the heat in every song that he sings.
Although he is famously known for his musical fusion of R&B, Pop, Groovy and Dancehall,
the versatile “ Mr Haffi Come Back” is tapping into his African roots and bringing us some
different vibes especially in his new afropop single “ Questions”.
Michael, who is originally from Grande Riviere, Gros-Islet, has been singing for the past
10 years, with his very first single “My Love Song” released in 2011. Michael developed an
undeniable love for music for music since growing up in a family where his mom was a
singer and his dad was a musician and singer at their local church.

Rational

Michael Robinson has made pieces in a diverse number of genres such groovy, soca and
afrobeat. One of my favourite pieces he made is an afropop single with the title “ Let me
know”.He has made popular hits such as “Still in love with you and Sweet addiction" .I chose
to research him because he does a diversified number of genres and he inspires me to do the
same.
Musical Analysis

Song Title: “Questions” This is a solo piece written by only Michael Robinson.

Melodic Features: The key of this piece was A minor, the chords used were Ab,
Eb,Bb,Ab.

Texture: The melody of this piece is sung by Michael Robinson; it's like “uh-huh
uh-huy uh-huh-huy” repeatedly and accompanied with a drum roll.

Expressive Features: The tempo is lively but it also gives a feel of slow whine.

Dynamics: The song starts with a verse which is forte.It was crescendo when the
chorus came and went back to forte for the second verse.Then back to the chorus but
the crescendo was more than the first time the chorus played.The bridge was forte and
it ended in decrescendo.

Form: First is a verse then chorus and after that is another verse then chorus again
then the bridge ends off the song.

Formal Structure:

Introduction: The song begins with an adlib , its a male voice shouting “Boh” and
it is accompanied by the snare drum although it sounds like the sticks are hitting the
rim of the drum. Along comes the guitar and bass guitar.Then the bass drum comes
with 4 beats . Then Michael sings “yeah” along with only the guitar then a drum roll.
Then the adlib “Boh” comes along with Michael vocals.

Verse 1: In this piece the first verse is before the chorus. It a tenor voice by
Michael Robinson accompanied with a guitar and bass guitar with the bass drum
and
the sticks hitting the rim of the snare drum. And before the second line in the verse a
sax can be heard. Throughout the verse maracas can be heard it can be heard alot in
Towards the ending of this verse.
Chorus: The chorus is after every verse in this piece starts with a drum roll then
the adlib “BOh '' along with the tenor voice by the artist and its repetitive.And made
throughout the melody and the maracas can be heard alot.

Rhythmic Features: The piece has a common time of 4/4 92 beats per minute

Genre: This piece has a unique genre called Afropop.Afropop is african popular
music played using electric instruments and inspired by western pop or soul
music.The way the drums are played is like how it is played in afrobeat. Also the
guitar is played like how it is played in groove music. There's a part of the piece
where Michael Robinson uses African slang in the lyrics.
