To use the balance for a long period, treat it carefully. INTRODUCTION This specific gravity measurement kit is provided as an optional accessory for the analytical balance AW/AX/AY series. The kit permits simple measurement of specific gravity of sample by measuring its weight in air and in liquid. Be sure to read this instruction manual before actually using this kit and keep the manual with care, ii 441 4.2 OVERVIEW Specific Gravity Measurement Software Specific gravity measurement kit is a standard accessory provided for all the AW/AXIAY series. It is not necessary to purchase the software separately. For how to operate the specific gravity measurement kit, refer to the instruction manual of the AW/AX/AY. series as well. Configuration (a) Bracket (b) Platform (c) Beaker (4) Bar thermometer (e) Surface active agent (f) Water pan (g) Column for floating sample (for measurement of the sample with the density lower than that of liquid) (h) Thermometer holder (i) Sinker (optional) HOW TO INSTALL SIMPLE SPECIFIC GRAVITY MEASUREMENT KIT This specific gravity measurement kit can be installed to all the models of the AW/AXIAY series in the same way. Install the kit to the balance with the following procedure. (1) Remove anti draft metal (4), pan (2), and pan supporter (3) from the weighing chamber. (1) Main balance body (2) Pan (3) Pan supporter (4) Anti draft metal (5) Level (6) Level screw (7) Glass doors (8) Weighing chamber (9) Case side wall (2) Mount bracket (a) on the shaft on which the pan supporter of the balance has been placed. Notice: The bracket provided as a standard accessory is the one for sedimentable sample (the sample which sinks when put in liquid.) To measure floating sample (the sample which floats when put in liquid), remove four screws of bracket (a) and replace the column with the one for floating sample (g). (3) Mount platform (b) so that it does not interfere with bracket (a). (4) Place the beaker filled with liquid on platform (b). (Attach bar thermometer (d) to the easy-to-see position of the beaker.) (5) Hang the water pan at the top of bracket (1). Notice: Special attention should be paid to prevent liquid from entering balance inside. ‘Turn off the power before performing the calibration, PRINCIPLE OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY MEASUREMENT Density pis defined with the following formula. p: Density Mass amount =V: Volume (g/cm? is used as the normal unit of p.) Several methods are available for measuring density. This kit permits both liquid and solid specific gravity measurement using Principle of Archimedes. (An optional sinker is required for liquid specific gravity measurement.) Principle of Archimedes: ‘The principle that buoyancy relative to its volume is applied to the solid immersed in liquid making the solid weigh less for the weight equivalent to the buoyancy. 44 42 SOLID SPECIFIC GRAVITY MEASUREMENT Basic Principle Liquid of known specific gravity (distilled water, ethanol etc.) is required for the specific gravity measurement using Principle of Archimedes. The weight of sample is measured in the air to seck the weighing value W,, and in the liquid to seck the weighing value W;. And the specific gravity is calculated with the following, formula. The buoyancy F is indicated as follows. F=Wa- Wyo Q) W.: Weight of the sample measured in the air W,: Weight of the sample measured in the liquid When the density of the liquid used at this process is o, the density of solid is sought as follows. Wa F p * pore sree Q) Procedure of Solid Specific Gravity Measurement Notice: Beaker (c) and water pan (f) are required for solid specific gravity ‘measurement. (1)_ Kit installation No. 1 Fill beaker (c) with liquid of known density (distilled water, ethanol etc.) and set the thermometer at the easy-to-see position. (2) Kit installation No. 2 Place beaker (c) set as in (1) on platform (b). (3) _ Kit installation No. 3 Hang the water pan from the upper portion of bracket (a). (Bubbles on the water pan may cause measurement error. Shake water pan (f) to remove bubbles.) Notice: Turn the power off before performing the calibration ‘To make the bubbles disappear, put two or three drops of surface active agent. (4) Setting of solvent specific gravity for solid specific gravity measurement No. 1 From the weight display of the balance, press CAL/MENU key several times and press TARE key when "SEtting G" is displayed. Notice: Pressing MENU key does not change the MENU unless it is pressed at the time of weight display. 6) © a (8) 0) Setting of solvent specific gravity for solid specific gravity measurement No. 2 Press CAL/MENU key several times and press TARE key when "LSG SEt" is displayed. In this occasion, MENU mark and # mark are displayed at the upper portion of the display inside. ‘This means that the balance is ready for numerical value input. "SG*. ****" is displayed and the digit to the right of G is blinking, Setting of solvent specific gravity for solid specific gravity measurement No. 3 ‘The numerical value at the blinking digit is the one to be changed. Every time UNIT key is pressed, the numerical value changes as 0 > 1 > > 8 9 > 0--. To confirm the value at that digit, press PRINT key. In this occasion, the previously set digit is confirmed and the digit one to the right blinks. To confirm the displayed value as the volume of the sinker for solid specific gravity measurement, press TARE key. Notice: Pressing POWER/BRK key does not change the value but returns the display to "LSG SEt" Setting of solvent specific gravity for solid specific gravity measurement No. 4 When "LSG SEt" is displayed, keep pressing POWER/BRK key to return to weight display. Setting specific measurement menu Press UNIT key from the weight display to change it to "\d" display. During weight measurement in the air, g unit is lit as well Notice: Turn the power off before performing the calibration. Measurement No. 1 Close the door of the weighing chamber of the balance and perform taring. (Do not load the sample yet and wait until the stability mark is lit.) (10) Measurement No. 1 ‘When the stability mark is displayed, measure the weight of the sample on the upper portion of water pan (f) and press CAL/MENU key when the stability mark is lit again. (11) Measurement No. 2 ‘Next, move the sample to the lower portion of the water pan and then, measure the weight again. (Make sure that no bubbles adhere to the sample and the pan.) (12) Measurement No. 3 Next, press CAL/MENU key again to measure the weight of the sample in the air. 43 5.1 Accuracy of Measurement Result (Solid Specific Gravity and Liquid Specific Gravity) ‘Temperature ‘The measuring method of this kit depends largely on temperature variation. The reason is that the density of liquid used for solid specific gravity measurement changes according to temperature variation. Normally, 1°C of temperature variation causes 1/1000 change to the density of liquid. This gives influence on the third decimal place of the density value of solid sample. Accordingly, to perform accurate density measurement, it is necessary to know the correct liquid density at the temperature when measurement is performed. For the liquid density of distilled ‘water and ethanol at the corresponding temperature, refer to the end of this manual Surface tension and bubbles When weighing is performed in water, buoyancy is applied to water pan (f). Accordingly, taring should be done with the water pan immersed in water beforehand. ‘The influence of surface tension can be ignored by measuring its weight in air and in water. Also, it is recommended to put several drops of surface active agent provided to the kit to perform correct measurement of weight using distilled water. Notice: Use attached surface active agent abundantly when repeatability is no good. Air density The density of air is 1.2 mg/cm’ (at normal weather condition.) ‘This means equivalent buoyance is always applied to the solid in the air, Accordingly, if the 1 > —--> 8-3 9-> 0---. To confirm the value at that digit, press PRINT key. In this occasion, the previously set digit is confirmed and the digit one to the right blinks. To confirm the displayed value as the volume of the sinker for specific gravity measurement, press TARE key. Pressing POWER/BRK key does not change the value but returns the display to "Sv SEt" Setting of sinker volume for liquid specific gravity measurement No. 4 When "Sv SEt" is displayed, keep pressing POWER/BRK key to return to the weight display. Setting the specific gravity measurement menu From the weight display, press UNIT key to select "d” display. However, when the sinker is measured in the air, g unit is displayed as well. Measurement No. 1 Close the door of the weighing chamber of the balance and perform taring, (Do not load the sample and wait until the stability mark is lit.) (8) Measurement No. 2 Hang the sinker from bracket (a). ‘CAL/MENU key. Measurement No. 3 Pour the liquid sample you wish to measure in the beaker (up to 1 cm above the ) sinker.) When the stability mark is lit, press The display after this indicates the specific gravity of the sample. (10) Measurement No. 4 For the next sample, start from step (6).
