What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is a sacred and religiously significant month for Muslims all over the world.
The month of Ramadan is observed to mark the time that God revealed the first chapters of the Quran to Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him. The
observance begins the morning after the crescent moon is seen. In the Islamic calendar, this marks the beginning of the new month.
This special time of the year encourages Muslims to practice sacrifice, self-discipline, self-control, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus
encouraging actions of generosity and charity, also known as zakat.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. However, fasting shouldn’t only be about abstaining from food and water. Muslims have to also refrain
from smoking, lying, gossiping and engaging in intimate activities.
This abstinence leaves a lot of room for self-reflection, which is arguably one of the most important aspects of Ramadan. It is a chance to reset your thinking,
change your habits, help others in need and just become a better person. It is a perfect time to pray to god.
Muslims also believe that the spiritual rewards for this good behavior are increased during Ramadan.
The fast is ended each day with a date and a meal shared with family.
The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival, known as Eid Al Fitr.
