familiarise yourself with competitors. Know your audience; ensure you get the names and job titles of those
with whom you are scheduled to have an interview.

Anticipate questions and practice your responses. Prepare and practice responses to standard
questions, like, “Tell me about yourself,” “Walk me through your CV,” and “Why should we choose you?”

Be aware of the image you present. You have only one chance to make a “first impression.” Remember

Delivering the Right Message

Sell Yourself. Your message during an interview should convey the value and skills you’ll bring to the
organisation. Provide reasons why the organisation should want you on their team by linking your skills with
their specific needs. Showing them what you can offer the organisation will enable you to differentiate yourself
from the competition.

Respond Concisely. During an interview, there should be a give and take exchange. Keep initial responses
brief and ask questions. Provide concise responses and ask for permission to provide more detail.

Share Achievements. When asked to identify a unique achievement, remember three key ingredients by
answering, “What was the problem you were trying to solve”, “what did you do to solve the problem,” and
“what were the results?” This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate a positive impact you had on the
organisation.

Be Prepared to Identify Weaknesses. When someone asks you about your weaknesses, typically they are
really asking you what you have identified as an opportunity for improvement and what have you done about it.
Choose something that is accurate, but won’t jeopardise your career opportunities. When responding, refer to
what you can do and have already done to improve technical or interpersonal skills.

Listen. Listening is an often overlooked interview skill. Candidates are often nervous about answering
interview questions correctly and neglect to listen carefully. You can improve your listening skills by
maintaining eye contact, using nonverbal expressions, and letting the speaker finish without interrupting.
