Water is flowing in a 5-meter horizontal 2-inch Schedule 80 steel pipe at an average

temperature of 65.6 ˚C and a velocity of 3 m/s. It is being heated by condensing steam at 110
˚C on the outside of the pipe wall. The steam-side coefficient has been estimated as ho =
9000 W/m2.K.

(a) Calculate the convective coefficient hi for water inside the pipe.
(b) Calculate the overall coefficient Uo based on the outside surface area of the pipe.
(b) Calculate the heat transfer rate, q of the pipe with the water.

Water at 30 ˚C enter inside a 3-meter horizontal 1.5-inch Schedule 40 steel pipe at a flow rate
of 60 kg/hr. The inside pipe surface is assumed constant at 120 ˚C since steam is condensing
outside the pipe wall and has a very large heat transfer coefficient. Predict the heat transfer
coefficient and the water outlet temperature, Tbo
