The controversial Manila Bay beach nourishment project has stirred various opinions and debates. The project
involves the use of crushed dolomite boulders to overlay a portion of the Manila Bay beach as part of a larger rehabilitation
effort. Critics have raised concerns about the potential hazards this project may pose to marine life, habitats, and public
health. The dolomite used in the project could disturb marine habitats by potentially burying them, reducing oxygen levels
in seawater, and blocking sunlight. Despite criticisms, proponents argue that the project is not just about aesthetics but also
aims to promote pro-environment behavior among Filipinos and boost local and international tourism. The Department of
Health has assured us that the dolomite material used is not a health hazard and does not pose risks to the public. The total
cost of the Manila Bay rehabilitation project is estimated at PHP 389 million, with around PHP 28 million allocated for the
dolomite overlay.

If I were a member of the DENR proposing a rehabilitation plan for Manila Bay to boost local and international
tourism, I would focus on mitigating environmental risks caused by human activities like pollution, over-fishing, and habitat
degradation. My proposal would involve raising awareness about these issues and implementing mitigation measures to
prevent adverse environmental effects. Additionally, I would emphasize the importance of stakeholder involvement,
cooperation with local government units, and the systematic management of toxic waste to restore and maintain the bay's
water quality. Sustainable development of the coastal area, including the establishment of eco-friendly attractions like a
water park, could attract more tourists and create employment opportunities. Relocating shipping ports could also be
considered for a more significant transformation of the bay area, although this might face opposition due to economic
interests.
