Farm Tractor Lubricants
Approval and Performance Claims
There are few formal lubricant approvals available from farm tractor manufacturers
and component suppliers, because of this the majority of oil approval claims are,

‘Suitable for use where the following tractor specifications are required’

Final Drive and Axle Oils
A New Level of Performance

01-01-10 © 2011 The Lubrizol Corporation OH101-2

Final Drive and Axle Oils

• Introduced FDAO to replace transmission/drive train oil

(TDTO) or TO-4 in final drives and axles
• TDTO/TO-4
– Provides excellent oxidation stability, foam, rust control and
cleanliness
– Protects gears and bearings satisfactorily
– Develops high friction coefficients to allow engagements of
brakes and clutches under both static and dynamic conditions
• FDAO provides improved gear and bearing life in final
drives and axles

08-24-10 © 2011 The Lubrizol Corporation OH101-3

Caterpillar Final Drive Axle Oil FD-1

• Final Drive and Axle Oil (FDAO) is classified by

CAT FD-1 Specification
– Designed for high load and high temperature applications
– FD-1 oils are compatible with CAT TDTO and CAT T0-4 oils
– Extended oil drain interval over CAT TO-4 oil
– SAE 50 and 60 viscosity grades

• FD-1 oils are without friction modification

– Use is in highly loaded final drives and axles that DO NOT contain friction
material.
– FD-1 oils DO NOT develop the high friction coefficient needed to satisfy
brake and clutch applications.
– Cannot be used in CAT TO-4 Transmissions and Hydraulics
– FDAO currently NOT recommended for any compartment that
contains friction materials (wet brake or transmissions)
08-24-10 © 2011 The Lubrizol Corporation OH101-14
Final Drive and Axle Oils

• Caterpillar FDAO used as

factory-fill for differential, front
wheels and final drives of
Caterpillar off-highway trucks
– Off-highway truck final drive and rear
axles
• Oil change interval extended to
4,000 hours when FDAO or FD-1 is
used
• TDTO oil change interval remains
2,000 hours
– Off-highway truck front wheels
• Oil interval change is 500 hours for
oils that meet FD-1 or TO-4
