6 The Preposition Poem

The missing words are in bold type. (The title is also in bold type!)

The Preposition Poem

I don’t believe in fairies,
but I’m interested in books.
This little one belongs to Jim,
about a girl with filmstar looks.
She’s married to a gangster
who only thinks of money.
He’s not afraid of anyone
and thinks robbing banks is funny.
His wife, she comes from Kenya
and is proud of being black.
She’s also fond of children
and has a teenage son called Jack.
He listens a lot to music,
but is very bad at reading.
He’s also tired of doing exams.
That’s why he’s good at cheating!
He reminds me of a girl I knew
who came from gay ‘Paree’.
She was full of life with a lovely smile

and preferred champagne to tea.
She arrived in England in ‘98,
looking for work in a bar.
She found a job in Camden Town
at a club called the ‘Rising Star’.
It was famous for karaoke nights –
they came from far and wide.
They hoped to be stars, but couldn’t sing.
Just glad to be inside.
She felt sorry for a man from Kent
who was singing a Beatles song.
The audience started booing him
– something she thought was wrong.
So she got angry with a customer
And smacked him on the nose.
“Who are you looking at?” she asked.
Then hit him as he rose.
He left and never came again.
That customer was me!
So take my advice and keep away
from bar girls from gay ‘Paree’!
