SRS Precautions and Procedures

General Precautions

NOTE: Some systems store data in memory that is lost when the 12 volt battery is disconnected. Before disconnecting the 12 volt
battery, refer to 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection.

Please read the following precautions carefully before servicing the SRS, or the airbags could accidentally deploy and cause damage
or injuries.
Except when doing electrical inspections that require 12 volt battery power, always turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, and
disconnect the negative cable from the 12 volt battery, then wait at least 3 minutes before starting work.
NOTE: The SRS memory is not erased even if the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode, or if the 12 volt battery cables are
disconnected from the 12 volt battery.
Use replacement parts which are manufactured to the same standards and quality as the original parts. Do not install used SRS
parts. Use only new parts when making SRS repairs.
Carefully inspect any SRS part before you install it. Do not install any part that shows signs of being dropped or improperly
handled, such as dents, cracks, or deformation.

cardiagn.com
Before disconnecting the SRS unit connectors, always disconnect the appropriate SRS parts connectors.
Use only a digital multimeter to check the system. If it is not a Honda multimeter, make sure its output is 10 mA (0.01 A) or less
when switched to the lowest value in the ohmmeter range. A tester with a higher output could cause accidental deployment and
possible injury.
Do not put objects on the front passenger's airbag.

Steering-Related Precautions
Cable Reel Alignment
Misalignment of the cable reel could cause an open in the wiring, making the SRS, remote steering wheel controls, or the horn
inoperative. Center the cable reel whenever you do the following.
- Installation of the steering wheel.
- Installation of the cable reel.
- Installation of the steering column.
- Other steering-related adjustment or installation.

Do not disassemble the cable reel.

Do not apply grease to the cable reel.
If the cable reel shows any signs of damage, replace it with a new one. For example, if the cable reel does not rotate smoothly,
replace it.

Airbag Handling and Storage

Do not disassemble an airbag. It has no serviceable parts. Once an airbag has been deployed, it cannot be repaired or reused.

For temporary storage of an airbag during service, observe the following precautions.
Store the removed airbag with the pad surface up. Never put anything on the airbag.

SRS Precautions and Procedures 6695 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

To prevent damage to the airbag, keep it away from any oil, grease, detergent, or water.

cardiagn.com
Store the removed airbag on a secure flat surface away from any high heat source (exceeding 200 °F (93 °C)).

Never do electrical tests on the airbags such as measuring resistance.

Do not position yourself in front of the airbag during removal, inspection, or replacement.

For proper disposal of a damaged airbag or tensioner, refer to Airbag and Tensioner Disposal.

SRS Unit, Front and Side Impact Sensors, Driver's Seat Position Sensor, and Front Passenger's
Weight Sensors
NOTE: Some systems store data in memory that is lost when the 12 volt battery is disconnected. Before disconnecting the 12 volt
battery, refer to 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection.

Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode. Disconnect the negative cable from the 12 volt battery, then wait at least 3 minutes
before starting installation or replacement of the SRS unit or disconnecting the connectors from the SRS unit.
Be careful not to bump or impact the SRS unit, the front impact sensors, or the side impact sensors when the vehicle is in the ON
mode or for at least 3 minutes after the vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
Do not reconnect any connectors to the SRS unit until it is fully installed including torquing the TORX bolts.

After a collision regardless if the front airbags, the side airbags, the side curtain airbags, or the front seat belt tensioners deployed
or not, always check the SRS data list to inspect which SRS components deployed. Check the deployed history and check for
DTCs with the HDS. Deployed components cannot be reused and must be replaced. Once you have identified which SRS
components require replacement, go to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment. If no airbags or tensioners were
deployed per inspection, check for any damage or deformation on the SRS unit, the front impact sensors, and the side impact
sensors. If there is any damage, replace the SRS unit, the sensors, and/or other damaged parts.

Do not disassemble the SRS unit, the front impact sensors, the side impact sensors, the driver's seat position sensor, or the front

cardiagn.com
passenger's weight sensors.
Always install the SRS unit and all impact sensors with the new TORX bolts to the specified torque.
Do not spill water or oil on the SRS unit or any of the sensors.

Wiring Precautions

Some of the SRS wiring can be identified by a special yellow outer covering while the SRS connectors can be identified by their yellow
color. Observe the following instructions.
Never attempt to modify, splice, or repair SRS wiring. If there is an open or damage to the SRS wiring, replace the harness.

Be sure to install the harness wires so they do not get pinched or interfere with other parts.
Make sure all SRS ground locations are clean, and the grounds are securely fastened for optimum metal-to-metal contact. Poor
grounds can cause intermittent problems that are difficult to diagnose.
Do not use any silicone based cleaners or lubricants on any SRS connectors or terminals.

SRS System Description - Overview 8894 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

SRS System Description - Overview

The vehicles are equipped with SRS airbags (driver's and front passenger's), side airbags, side curtain airbags, and seat belt
tensioners.

SRS Airbag System (Driver's and Front Passenger's Airbag)

In case of a frontal collision, the SRS airbag system uses a seat belt tensioner as a body restraint device in addition to the impact-
absorbing construction of the body shell as a function to mitigate the impact forces acting on the head and chest of the front seat
occupant.
Seat Belt Tensioner

The seat belt tensioner instantaneously retracts the seat belt at the time of a collision, and the effect of the seat belt is increased
further by securely restraining the occupant in the seat. In the case of a low-speed collision, since the seat belt can adequately secure
the occupant, only the seat belt tensioner is activated to retract the seat belt without deploying the airbags. In the case of a medium
speed to high speed collision, the airbags and seat belt tensioner are activated to improve the restraining effect of the occupant and
the safety performance.

cardiagn.com
Operating process of the SRS airbag
1. The impact force generated by frontal collision is transmitted via the vehicle's structural components and input from each of the
front impact sensors, the front impact G sensors and the safing drive circuit inside the SRS unit.

2. The front impact sensor converts the collision to electrical signals which are sent to the microprocessor and the safing drive circuit
inside the SRS unit. At the same time, the front impact G sensors inside the SRS unit converts the collision input into waveform
electrical signals and sends them to the microprocessor and the safing drive circuit.

3. The microprocessor outputs actuation signals if the outputs from the front impact sensors and front impact G sensor exceed the
preset threshold value. At this time, if the output from the safing drive circuit inside the SRS unit exceeds the preset threshold
value, current flows through a trigger circuit, which deploys the SRS airbag and operates the seat belt tensioner.

SRS System Description - Overview 8894 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

SRS airbag does not deploy in the following cases:

The SRS airbag deploys when a strong impact comes from the front right or left direction within 30 degrees from the front face when
the vehicle is in the ON mode. Therefore, in the following cases, the SRS airbag does not deploy because there is no effect on the
occupant protection. Note that it may deploy depending on the state of collision.

cardiagn.com
SRS airbag may not deploy in the following cases:

The deployment of the SRS airbag is designed based on the scale of the impact felt by the occupant. Therefore, the deployment of the
SRS airbag is not always related to the amount of damage to the vehicle.

Side Airbag System and Side Curtain Airbag System

In case of a side impact, the side airbag, the side curtain airbag, and the seat belt tensioner on the impact side operate in addition to
the impact-absorbing body shell of the vehicle, which mitigates the impact forces acting on the head and chest of the occupant.
Moreover, the left and the right side impact sensors detect the various states of collision so that the airbag deploys accordingly. The
side airbag uses a variable volume type; the construction and the deployment process of the airbag pressure chamber have been
improved, and enable a safe deployment regardless of the position of the occupant. Therefore, conventional OPDS related parts are
not equipped.

Side airbag and side curtain airbag deployment process

1. The collision force generated from the side impact is input to each of the side impact sensors and the side impact G sensor inside
the SRS unit.

2. If the microprocessor inside the SRS unit determines that the side impact sensor output exceeds a preset threshold value, and if
the output from the side impact G sensor inside the SRS unit exceeds a preset threshold value, the circuit creates an actuation
signal.

cardiagn.com
3. The actuation signal is sent from the microprocessor to the trigger circuit, which deploys the side airbag, the side curtain airbag,
and the seat belt tensioner.
NOTE: In cases of a strong frontal collision, the threshold value for a side impact is exceeded in the SRS unit, the side curtain
airbag may deploy.

Side airbag and side curtain airbag deployment conditions

When the vehicle is subject to strong side impact and the side impact G sensor detects an impact that exceeds the preset threshold
value, the side airbags and side curtain airbags on the side receiving the impact will deploy.

NOTE: The side curtain airbags may deploy along with the front airbags during a front-end collision in order to protect the heads of
occupants if the collision force to the side of the vehicle exceeds a certain value.

Conditions in which side airbag and side curtain airbag may not deploy

Since the side airbags and the side curtain airbags are designed to deploy when an impact force to the vehicle side exceeds a preset
value, they may not deploy when impact forces are reduced by the vehicle's crush zone, or when a side impact is applied in the front

cardiagn.com
or behind the passenger compartment. Also, these airbags may deploy in the case of side slip collision or when the vehicle roll overs,
but in such cases, will not provide full occupant protection.

DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

The self-diagnostic function of the SRS unit allows it to locate the causes of system problems and
store this information in memory. For easier troubleshooting, this data can be retrieved with the
HDS via the data link circuit.

5 of 8 12/20/2018 7:46 AM
How to Troubleshoot the SRS 3009 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

When you turn the vehicle to the ON mode, the SRS indicator should come on. If it goes off
after 6 seconds, the system is normal and is not currently detecting any problems.
If there is a problem, the system locates and defines the problem, stores this information in
the memory, and turns on the SRS indicator. The data remains in the memory even if the
vehicle is turned to the OFF (LOCK) mode or the 12 volt battery is disconnected.
The data is stored in memory as a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
DTCs are either latching or resetting depending on the malfunction. With resetting DTCs, the
SRS indicator goes off the next time the vehicle is turned to the ON mode, and the system is
normal, but the DTC is still stored. With latching DTCs, the SRS indicator does not turn off
until the malfunction is repaired and the DTC is cleared.
When you connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC), you can retrieve a more
detailed DTC in the HDS ''SRS'' menu.
After reading and recording the DTC, go to the troubleshooting procedure for that code.

Precautions
Make sure the 12 volt battery is fully charged. If the 12 volt battery is dead or low, electrical
measurement values may not be correct.
Use only a digital multimeter to check the system. Make sure its output is 10 mA (0.01 A) or
less when switched to the smallest value in the ohmmeter range. A tester with a higher
output could damage the airbag circuit or cause accidental airbag deployment and possible
injury.

cardiagn.com
Whenever the vehicle is turned to the ON mode, or the vehicle is in the OFF (LOCK) mode
for less than 3 minutes, be careful not to bump the SRS unit; the airbags could accidentally
deploy and cause damage or injuries.
Before removing the dashboard wire harness or floor wire harness, disconnect the driver's
airbag inflator connector, the front passenger's airbag inflator connector, both side airbag
inflator connectors, both side curtain airbag inflator connectors, and both front seat belt
tensioner connectors.

How to Read DTCs

NOTE: Make sure the 12 volt battery is fully charged before you begin.

1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then wait for 10 seconds.

2. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).

3. Use the HDS to check for SRS DTCs.

4. Read and record the DTC.

NOTE: Do not clear the DTC until instructed by the troubleshooting procedure.

5. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then wait for 10 seconds.

6. Do the troubleshooting procedure for the DTC.

3. Clear the DTC(s) by following the screen prompts on the HDS.

4. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then wait for 10 seconds.

Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures

If there was a malfunction that sets a DTC, but it does not recur, a DTC will be stored in the
memory, and the SRS indicator may come on depending on the malfunction detected.

NOTE:
Check the condition of the 12 volt battery. Low battery voltage may cause some intermittent
failures.
A faulty or damaged cable reel can cause intermittent problems related to the driver's airbag
inflator DTCs.

After checking the DTC, troubleshoot as follows:

1. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

2. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

cardiagn.com
3. Set the parking brake, then start the engine, and let it idle.

4. The SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

5. Shake the related wire harnesses and the connectors, and look for loose connections, poor
pin fits, and poor grounds.

6. Take a test-drive (quick acceleration, quick braking, and cornering), turn the steering wheel
fully left and right, and hold it there for 5 to 10 seconds. If the problem recurs, the SRS
indicator will come on.

7. If you cannot duplicate the concern, ask the customer about the conditions when it occurred,
or ask the customer to demonstrate the concern.

8. If you cannot duplicate the intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

(2-door), and/or C-pillar trim (4/5-door)), the overlap between the headliner and pillar trim must be 8.0 +0/-3.0 mm (0.315
+0/-0.118 in). To check the overlap, do this:

1. Install the headliner (A) and the pillar trim (B).

2. Apply masking tape (C) to the headliner to mark the upper edge (D) of the pillar trim.

3. Remove the pillar trim, and measure the headliner overlap.

If the overlap is 8.0 +0/-3.0 mm (0.315 +0/-0.118 in), remove the tape, and install the pillar trim.
If the overlap is more than 8.0 mm (0.315 in), go to step 4.

4. Carefully trim the headliner with a utility knife, reducing the overlap to 8.0 +0/-3.0 mm (0.315 +0/-0.118 in).

5. Remove the tape, and install the pillar trim.

SRS System Description - Driver%27s and Front Passenger%27s Airbag... http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

SRS System Description - Driver's and Front Passenger's Airbag

SRS Airbag (Driver's and Front Passenger's Airbag)

The driver's airbag is located in the center of the steering wheel. The front passenger's airbag is located in the dashboard on the front
passenger's side.

cardiagn.com
Driver's Airbag (Continuous Capacity Change Type)

For the driver's airbag, the continuous capacity changing airbag that is spiral stitched coming with the exhaust air control valve helps
lower the impact of airbag while protecting the occupants effectively. The spiral stitched airbag can get inflated in a shorter time at the
suitable air-pressure with a small amount of inside-air; however it does not compromise the ability of protecting the occupants. The
exhaust air control valve on the airbag adjusts the air-pressure properly, and tearing the spiral stitches on the airbag will increase its
air-capacity inside the airbag so that the system can keep its proper air-pressure.

Dual Inflators

The airbag modules adopt dual inflators for the driver's and the front passenger's airbag. The dual inflators increase airbag
effectiveness by properly adjusting the timing when the two inflators are ignited (together or sequentially) referring to the collision
speed or collision impact.

SRS System Description - Driver's Seat Position Sensor

The driver's seat position sensor is mounted to the driver's seat rail. When the driver's seat is moved to the full-forward position, a
metal part of the seat track interrupts the sensor signal. This change in signal is then sent to the SRS unit for processing. If a frontal
airbag deployment becomes necessary, the driver's airbag will deploy at the slowest rate, regardless of impact severity. With the seat
moved further back, the SRS unit commands the appropriate deployment force based on impact severity.

SRS System Description - Front Passenger%27s Weight Sensor 1393 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

SRS System Description - Front Passenger's Weight Sensor

Overview
The front passenger's weight sensors for load detection are equipped inside the front passenger's seat. The SRS unit receives the
load information from the weight sensors, performs an occupant judgment of the front passenger's seat, and adjusts the front
passenger's airbag deployment and performance. In addition, there are two types of weight sensors, a two sensor type and a four
sensor type. The HDS can determine which type is used.
Operation
The weight of the front passenger's seat is detected by the weight sensors and sent to the SRS unit. If the weight is above a threshold
level, front passenger's airbag operation is allowed, and if the weight is below a threshold level, the system will automatically turn the
front passenger's airbag off. And the front passenger's airbag cutoff indicator turns on to inform the occupant that the front
passenger's airbag will not deploy.

NOTE: The front passenger's weight sensors measure only the weight that's actually on the seat cushion. They do not measure the
weight of the front passenger's legs extending to the floor or arms resting on the armrests. A front seat passenger who weighs near
the airbag's cutoff threshold may cause the airbag and indicator to turn on and off just by moving around in the seat and shifting the
occupant weight. This may cause some occupants to believe there's something wrong with the airbag system when it is operating
normally. Also, although the measured weight of the two sensor type differs by the seating state of the occupant, load detection by the
weight sensors is performed accurately.

SRS System Description - Seat Belt Tensioner 1286 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

SRS System Description - Seat Belt Tensioner

ELR Seat Belt Tensioner With Load Limiter

The ELR seat belt tensioner with load limiter is composed of a gas generator, a ring gear, a pinion, an ELR locker, and a spool. When
the seat belt tensioner operates, it quickly tightens the seat belt and improves the occupant's initial restraining effect (preventing the
occupant's body from moving forward). When the load exceeds the preset value, the load limiter keeps the restraining effect while
sending out the seat belt to protect the chest of the passenger.

cardiagn.com
Operation of Seat Belt Tensioner
1. The gas pressure in the gas generator circulates the ball in the pipe, and presses it against the ring gear. This connects the ring
gear to the pinion.

2. When the ball reaches the ring gear, it presses the ring gear against the pinion so the gear turns with the pinion. The spool that is
connected to the pinion winds the seat belt.

3. If the seat belt is rapidly pulled out, like an occupant sliding forward during a collision, the seat belt operates the lock mechanism,
engaging the pawl to the frame gear. That locks the locking base and its integrated torsion bar and spool.

cardiagn.com
4. When a certain amount of load is added to the seat belt when the locking base is locked, the torsion bar is twisted, and the spool is
rotated, allowing the seat belt to be pulled out.

5. When the seat belt is pulled out, the ring gear pushes back the ball, and the ring gear is released from the pinion.

SRS System Description - Side Airbag and Side Curtain Airbag

Side Airbag

The side airbags are located at the outside position of the seat-back of the driver's seat and the front passenger's seat. Being installed
at the seat-back enables operation in optimal condition for the occupants regardless of the seat slide and recline position.

The side airbag assembly is configured with an inflator and an airbag. It is designed in a way that the airbag tears open the seam of
the seat-back to enable efficient deployment. Objects adjacent to deployment or using a seat cover other than the one dedicated for
the side airbag may prevent proper operation of the side airbag.

cardiagn.com
Side Curtain Airbag

The side curtain airbags are compactly stored along the roof. The side curtain airbags are deployed by triggering a gas inflator at the
cargo side lining, and the gas passes through the roof side and into the airbag. Objects adjacent to deployment or attached parts other
than the ones dedicated for side curtain airbags may prevent the proper operation of the side curtain airbags.
