Brexit

Di MAGRI MATTEO
The meaning of the word Brexit refers
to the exit of the United Kingdom from
the European Union and derives from
the collapse of two English words:
Britain, "Great Britain", and exit, "exit".
The term has now entered the
language of common use and in the
last three years it has inevitably
become a synonym of profound
uncertainty. The meaning of Brexit,
WHAT IS however, is not only technical: as
anticipated, in fact, the exit of the
BREXIT United Kingdom from the EU will have
consequences not only for the British
but for the entire world economy. The
signal launched by the people, first
with the June 2016 referendum and
then again with the December 2019
elections, called into question the
Europe project and immediately gave
new life to Eurosceptic parties.
On 23 June, citizens of Great
Britain are called to vote on the
Brexit referendum, or will have
to decide whether or not they
want to stay or leave the EU.
Citizens will have to answer the
WHEN IT question "Should the UK
continue as a member of the
STARTED European Union or must it
leave the EU?" By choosing an
option from the questions:
"Stay as a member of the EU"
or "Leave the EU

the Brexit referendum was
convened by Prime Minister David
Cameron. During the 2015
election campaign, the
Conservative leader had promised
WHO that he would hold a referendum
WANTED IT in case of victory in the elections,
to respond to requests from
FIRST ? parliamentarians from his party
and from UKIP, the nationalist and
eurosceptic party led by Nigel
Farage who insisted for British
citizens to express themselves
again on the subject, after the
referendum held in 1975 .
BECAUSE HAS First, the regaining of sovereignty over the
DECIDED TO powers that were slowly and irreversibly
moving to Bruxelles.
GO OUT OF The second key reason is that voters needed
to control British borders, or in other words,
THE UE ? to reduce immigration
The most ambiguous position in this
sense is that of the party currently in
POSITION OF government: the Conservatives' front
is notoriously split and the two
“LEAVE” factions are led by Prime Minister
AND David Cameron, who presses for the
"remain" (who want to stay in the EU)
“REMAIN” and by the former mayor of London,
Boris Johnson, openly lined up for the
"leave" (who want to leave the EU).
Theresa May outlined the three practical options. A
second referendum on them is our best chance of
consent. This deal is the worst of all worlds. Adopting
EU rules without saying a word and risking breaking
the UK is not what people voted for. We have to face
the facts. Parliament is blocked. There is no majority
among MPs for the Prime Minister's agreement in
MEANING OF parliament or for leaving without any agreement. No
matter how determined a single group is, the numbers
“GRIDLOCKED don't add up. By July it was already clear to me that
PARLIAMENT” we were heading for a parliamentary deadlock. I have
outlined a proposal to give everyone a fair and
definitive judgment on our future relations with the
EU in a second referendum. There is a way out of the
Brexit impasse we find ourselves in, but it will require
honesty, pragmatism and leadership from the
government, parliament and all parties.

Theresa May, born Brasier is a British
politician, leader of the Conservative
Party from 11 July 2016 to 23 July
2019 and Prime Minister of the
THERESA United Kingdom from 13 July 2016 to
24 July 2019 She has been Secretary
MAY of State for Internal Affairs from 2010
until her appointment as Prime
Minister, and a member of the House
of Commons for Maidenhead College
since 1997.
• Boris Johnson is a British politician,
journalist and writer. He has been Prime
Minister of the United Kingdom since 24
July 2019 and leader of the
BORIS Conservative Party since the previous

JOHNSON day. He was Mayor of London for two

terms, from 4 May 2008 to 9 May 2016
and from 13 July 2016 to 9 July 2018
Secretary of State for Foreign and
Commonwealth Affairs of the May I and
II governments.
Britain has voted, for the fourth
time in just over four years, for its
future. And this time what is
happening, confirming the exit
RATINGS OF polls, is a real triumph of the
conservatives led by Boris

one step away from Brexit.

while Jeremy Corbyn's Labor

1. The political consequences The consequences of Brexit were
primarily political. David Cameron has announced his resignation as
Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader. To replace it was
Theresa May, who held the reins of the country until late spring
CONSEQUENC 2019, when she left Johnson's chair. Brexit has given new life to
Scotland's requests, with Nicola Sturgeon clamoring for a

ES referendum on independence. At the same time, the Spanish

government has requested joint control of Gibraltar while Sinn Fein
hypothesized the union of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Far-right

BREXIT parties, especially in Western Europe, have gained momentum

thanks to the very meaning of Brexit.
• 2. The financial consequences At first, Brexit has made financial
markets more sensitive to vulnerabilities in the euro area. The
pound fell to 30-year lows and world stock exchanges burned 2,000
billion in a single day. Investors wonder if, in light of the Brexit
shock, eurozone governments will have the will and ability to
strengthen the monetary union system

3. The economic consequences The
Leave's win had strong economic
consequences on world markets and the
UK lost its AAA rating level. The Bank of

CONSEQUEN England has started cutting interest rates

and has taken other emergency
measures to help stop the British
CE economy's race for recession.

BREXIT • 4) The commercial consequences There

is still much uncertainty on this front,
given that, once the European Union has
2.0 left the United Kingdom, it will have to
review its trade relations not only with
the blockade, but with the whole world.
The details on this will certainly be
explored during the transition period that
will start in January and end in late 2020.

ItalExit means the realization of the
"wet dream of Italian sovereigns" or
the exit of Italy from the Euro, as a
currency. Practically a Brexit to the
nth degree, given that even if we are
the third EU power and the 7th in the
ITALEXIT world, at least so they say, the return
to a Lira could create a currency,
financial and economic earthquake
that risks sinking our peninsula not
energy self-sufficient and with a large
public debt stipulated in Euros After
this explanation, I think that Italy is
"doing well" as it is.

My thought after examining the
situation is this: England erroneously
THE left the EU because, in this way, it
deprived itself of European privileges
THOUGHT OF and funding. Now the aforementioned
nation is in a political chaos
A THIRTEEN witnessed by the recent resignation
of former Prime Minister Theresa
YEAR OLD May. In my opinion, the only solution
to this problem is a new referendum
to return to the EU, even if I see it
hard.
