Abstract

The industrial wastewater disposal into surface water and/or land has become a vital issue

Introduction

• As the government of Egypt pays much attention in raising the

people’s standard of living, one of the most critical areas is the
treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater.
• This objective doesn't only raise the standard of living but also has
vital and economical effects.
• It protects the health of people and the treated water could be used
for irrigation of green areas, saving the Nile river water for human
use and irrigation of crops.

Aim of Study

This research includes studies done for the combined domestic and
industrial WW produced from four industrial Egyptian cities which
include:
 10th of Ramadan city,
 New Nubaria city,
 New Borg El Arab city, and
 Mubarak industrial zone in Quesnna
and shows the different proposed treatment facilities to enhance the final
effluent treated quality of the combined domestic and industrial wastewater
before discharging it to surface waters.

... Unfortunately, the wastewater from the industrial factories in 10th of Ramadan city, Sharqia governorate alone ejects
about 500 tons of dyestuffs each year to the water supplies and environment [9,14, 15] , causing great threatening to
aquatic life and humankind with prevalence of severe allergic dermatitis and skin irritation, cancer and mutation [16].
Inspection of literature, several physical and chemical treatment technologies such as coagulation [17], flocculation [18],
ozonation and Fenton oxidation [13,19], adsorption [16,20], membrane and bio-processes [13,21], and reverse osmosis
[21] are used influentially for depollution of dyeing wastewater. ...
... The fresh SVO was also examined for comparison purposes. In each experiment, 10 mg of the examined catalyst
was added into 50 mL CI solution (of 24 mg/L concentration at pH 6.0), simulating the pollutant concentration in the
wastewater effluents from the industrial factories of 10th of Ramadan city [15] . An ultrasonic treatment of 4 min was
carried out to ensure even dispersion of such catalyst dosage (200 μg/mL, solid: liquid) into the as-prepared dye
solution. ...

... Since the early 1980s, all types of wastewater including domestic and industrial effluents have been discharged into
three stabilization pond sets (Ox.P1, 2 and 3, Fig. 1). These ponds (lagoons) were established in the eastern lowland of
the city with a total capacity of 150,000 m 3 /day of wastewater, which is discharged through artificial drains and an open
drainage system (Taha et al. 2004; El Monayeri et al. 2011 ). There are two types of such lagoons in the area, uncased
(unlined) and cased (lined or developed) ponds. ...
... There are two types of such lagoons in the area, uncased (unlined) and cased (lined or developed) ponds. Currently,
the efficiency of these ponds is deteriorating due to hydraulic overloading and lack of purification and maintenance since
they were established (El Monayeri et al. 2011) . Additionally, the uncased ponds and drainage network lie on porous
calcareous sandy soil with clay intercalation (Fig. 2). ...

... Disposal of industrial WW (raw or/ partially treated) into the existing Domestic WWTPs is a common practice in the
industrial cities in Egypt such as: 10th of Ramadan city, New Nubaria city, and New Borg El Arab city (El Monayeri et.al.
9 , 2011). 10 th of Ramadan city is considered to be the largest industrial city in Egypt. Currently, there are two sources
for industrial wastewater in this city: the first source includes industrial waste only, whereas the second source includes
the industrial waste coming from the boundaries of the residential area combined with domestic sewage. ...

Performance of the static granular bed reactor (SGBR) was compared to the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. A
statistically designed study was performed to establish significance of differences between the two reactors operating at three different
hydraulic retention times (HRTs); 8, 16, and 24 hours. The reactors treated a synthetic wastewater composed of sucrose and non-fat
