Department of Mechanical Engineering

Technical English Course

Third course:
Introduction to Mechanical Engineering

3.1 What is Mechanical Engineering?

The Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. It is a branch of

engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and
the design, production and use of machines and tools.
Mechanical engineers design, develop, build, and test. They deal with anything that moves, from
components to machines to the human body.
Mechanical Engineering is a broad spectrum of Occupations and Challenges:
❖ Research
❖ Development
❖ Design
❖ Testing
❖ Manufacturing And Production
❖ Operations And Maintenance
❖ Marketing And Sales

3.2 What do mechanical engineers do?

Mechanical engineering affects almost every aspect of your life. Most of the things that we
use in our daily life are designed and developed by mechanical engineers. For example, micro-
sensors, computers, automobiles, sports equipment, medical devices, robots, and many other
things. These new devices and equipment help to make our lives better.
✓ Analyze problems to see how mechanical and thermal devices might help solve a
particular problem.

✓ Design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices or subsystems, using analysis and
computer-aided design.
