Personal and Social Domain

The applications that fall in this domain are those that enable the user to interact with other people to
maintain and build social relationships. Things may automatically trigger transmissions to friends to
allow them to know what we are doing or what we have done in the past, such as moving to/from
house/ office travelling, meeting friends.

Social Networking
This application is related to the automatic update of information about our social activities in social
networking web portals, such as twitter and Plazes. RFID tags connected to people can provide real-time
updates. Applications user interface display a feed of events that their friends have preliminary defined
and the users can control their friend lists as well as what events are disclosed to friends.

Historical Queries
Historical queries about objects and events data let study trends in their activities over time. This can be
extremely useful for applications that support long term activities such as business projects and
collaborations. A digital diary application can be built that records and displays events for example in a
Google calendar for later perusal. This way, users can look back over their dairies to see how and with
whom they have spent their time. Historical trend plots can also be automatically generated.

Loses
A search engine for things is a tool that helps in finding objects that we don’t remember where have
been left. The simplest web-based RFID applications is a search engine for things that let users view the
last recorded location for this tagged objects or search for a particular objects location. A more pro-
active extension of this application leverages user-defined events to notify users when the last recorded
objects location matches some conditions. This can be used for also tracking lost objects or can be used
to update if some objects move out of a certain range to indicate theft.

PAW a IoT tracking system is used for tracking dogs. PAW is comprised of three key components the
kibble, the hydrant and the Dashboard.

The kibble is a BLE device that is attached to the dog’s collar. Each dog has an unique kibble ID.

The hydrant is an enclosure that houses the Raspberry PI. It Listens for Kibbles so when a dog passes
into a triangulated area, a message is sent to PAW indicating that it is in range.

The PAW dashboard is where registered users can login and see their geographical area, a list of dogs
and their current position within a geographical area.

There will multiple hydrants placed in a geographical area. If a hydrant does not pick up a kibble for
some time, the dog is considered to be out of range and the owner is notified immediately via SMS.
Personalized Billboards
Mini USA has recently launched an initiative that delivers custom messages to mini cooper. Owners on
billboards – the term used is “talking” billboards. The boards, that usually carry typical advertising, are
programmed to identify approaching mini Drivers through an RFID chip in their key fobs. Most messages
are employment – related or it is to wish them on their birthdays/anniversary.

Coke as part of its global campaign invites users to enter the names and preferred bill board locations on
a smart phone application. The application then identifies the customer as they approach the billboard
and transmit their names to it.

Using geo fencing the display updates and also alerts the customer.

Geo fencing is a feature in a software program that uses the global positioning system or RFID to define
geographical boundaries.

Geo-fencing allows user to set-up triggers so when a device enter/exits a boundary, an alert is issued.
Many geo-fencing applications incorporate Google Earth, some applications define boundaries by
longitude and latitude or through user created and web-based maps.

Geo-fencing virtual barriers can be active or passive. Active geo-fencing require an end user to opt in to
location services and a mobile application to open. Passive geo-fencing are always on; they rely on WIFI
and cellular data instead of GPS or RFID and work in the background.

Geo-fencing is not only used in this application – but can also be used for drone/fleet management.
Security in case of unauthorized access, law enforcement and home automation (to detect if user has
left his house).

It is also possible to use a combination of social networking and personalized ads to do “smart
marketing” where products that are of interest to user are displayed every time he passes the billboard.
The social network can be used to assess the user’s interest.
