Agriculture is the practice of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture was the key to the
development of existing human civilizations, with the cultivation of domesticated species
creating food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. About 52 percent of India's total
labor force is employed in this sector. Although the contribution of agriculture to GDP has
declined considerably today, this sector continues to be India's largest economic sector and plays
an important role in the country's overall socio-economic development . This study investigates
the agriculture-based livelihood status in Passabong village, located in Kalimpong district, with a
focus on understanding the socio-economic conditions, agricultural production, agricultural
practices, agricultural marketing, communication details related to agriculture and challenges
faced by the farming community. Utilizing this project under random sampling method, primary
data were collected through 30 household surveys, interviews, and field observations. The main
reason for selecting this village for the project is its remoteness from the locality. The findings
indicate that agriculture is the primary source of livelihood, with a majority of households
engaging in crop cultivation and livestock rearing. However, the sector faces significant
challenges, including limited access to modern farming technologies, inadequate irrigation
facilities, and market constraints. Despite these obstacles, the community demonstrates resilience
through traditional knowledge and community cooperation. The study concludes with
recommendations for enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability, emphasizing the
need for improved infrastructure, capacity-building programs, policy support and the support of
government programs and policies helps to uplift the livelihood status of the residents in
Passabong village.
