How can we use data to

compare basketball
player performance?

The points scored by teammates Kevin Durant

and Stephen Curry of the Golden State
Warriors are shown in the table for the first
20 games that both players were active in
the 2017-2018 season.

1. Construct a time series plot in Excel that compares Durant’s and Curry’s performance over the first 20 games
and paste it here.

3. Find the 50th percentile for two distributions. What does your comparison mean in this situation?
Durant scores 24 points as his 50th percentile. Curry scores 27 points at his 50th percentile. What my comparison
means in this situation is Curry scores more at his 50th percentile than Durant.

4. Compare the spreads (the widths) of the two distributions. What does your comparison mean in this situation?
Curry has bigger scoring outputs at a less consistent rate than Durant.

5. If there were one outlier for the Curry distribution, what would it be? Does this support the comparison you
made above? Explain.

One outlier for the Curry distribution is that he scored nine points in game one. Yes it supports the comparison
made above because even though Curry has bigger scoring games he also has smaller scoring games than
Durant. Overall, Durant is more consistent with his outputs than Curry.
