1. Design instruction

The design is for outer wall cathodic protection of 3299m3 oil tank bottom of 900MW
BQPS-III combined cycle plant&Associated Transmission project
Method of cathodic protection: Impressed current cathodic protection.

2. General design requirement

The mixed metal oxide(hereinafter referred to as MMO )anodes are used for impressed
current cathodic protection system.
Design life : 20 years.
Don’t interfere with other metal structures.

3. Standard and code

The information was provided by owner.


Execution standard specification:
API RP 651-2007 Cathodic Protection of Aboveground Petroleum Storage Tanks.
NACE RP 0193-2001 Standard Recommended Practice External Cathodic Protection
of On-Grade CarbonSteel Storage Tank Bottoms.
NACE RP 0285-2002 Corrosion Control of Underground Storage Tank Systems by
Cathodic Protection
ASTM B338-14. Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and
Titanium Alloy Tubes for Condensers and Heat Exchangers

4. Design of cathodic protection system for outer wall of the tank bottom

4.1 Design parameter

Storage tank specification: diameter Φ19m×12m, 3299m3


Designed life: 30 years
Protection current density: Id=20mA/m2
Sand resistivity: =200·m
Anode bed type: the grid anode system
Anode materials: mixed metal oxide Ti anode
Anode specifications: wide: W=6.35mm, thickness: T=0.635mm, electrical resistivity:

0.138/m, rated output current: 18.7mA/m
Ti conductive titanium strip: wide: 12.7mm, thickness: 0.89mm,
electrical resistivity: 0.049/m
Design maximum output current: i=17mA/m
Anode buried depth: 300mm from tank bottom

4.2 Principles of protection

Polarization potential of protected tank bottom should less than or equal to


-0.85V (Relative to the saturation of Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode);Polarization
potential of protected tank bottom should less than or equal to +0.25V (Relative to the
Zinc reference electrode)
Ⅱ.A minimum of 100mv of cathodic polarization between the carbon steel surface of
the tank bottom and a stable reference electrode.

4.3 Design calculation (single tank)

Protection area: A=D2/4=285m2


Protection current: I=A*Id=5.7A
Length of the single tank anode: L=I/i=304m
Reserve factor: 5% L=320m
4.3.1 Specifications, performance and length of the MMO anodes ribbon
MMO anode specifications: 6.35×0.635mm
MMO anode electric chemical properties: In the dry sand layer, 17mA/m
MMO anode belt length calculation: 320m
MMO anode actual laying length calculation: The distance between anodes is 0.9m.
Calculation length: 316m.The conductive titanium strip and anode ribbon was
connected by spot welding, and anode ribbon is not allowed to have joint.
4.3.2 Length of anode conductive ribbon
The specifications of anode conductive ribbon: 12.7×0.9mm
The conductive titanium strip need100 m, and distance between conductive titanium
strip is 3m.
4.3.3 Anode cable joint
Each tank need 4 special anode cable joints.

4.4 calculations file

(1)Calculation of resistance of anode ground bed

(2) Cathodic protection loop resistance calculation

Rc—Protected body earthing resistance, Usually =0.2Ω
. R—Total circuit resistance(Ω)
Calculation result R=1.97Ω, take 20% margin,
(3)Voltage output calculation
Vh=1.2×I×R
=13.47V
Vh—Potentiostat output voltage(V), I—Protection current(A)
R—Total circuit resistance(Ω),
Considerring certain margin when the potentiostat running at full load. The actual
voltage and current parameters of potentiostat: 30V/20A. There are two potentiostats and
each tank need one.
(4) Design life accounting

4.4.2 Anodes
The anode and conductive titanium strip shall cross each other and be welded together ,
the distance between anode ribbon is 0.9m, the distance between conductive titanium strip
is 3m.The distance from the tank bottom is generally 300mm.
4.4.3 Reference electrode
Each tank install three long-term copper/copper sulfate reference electrodes and one
high purity zinc reference electrode.All reference electrodes shall be prepacked in filler
package.
4.4.4 Test pile
Each tank set up a Explosion-proof reference junction box where test cable and reference
cable are connected Specification: 300*200*150mm, dⅡ BT4 IP65.
4.4.5 Explosion-proof junction boxes
Explosion-proof junction box is equipment where anode cables, anode bus cable, the
cathode and zero position cable and Reference cable are connected. It is located in the fire
protection embankment area of the tank farm,and designed as anti-explosion type.,
Specification: 300*200*150mm, dⅡ BT4 IP65

4.5 Construction requirements

4.5.1 Installation of the Potentiostat


Each tank adopts one potentiostat, and installed in a cathodic protection room with
electricity supply. The cathodic protection room shall be located in non –explosion proof
area.The potentiostat has the function to supply power uninterruptedly and main technical
specifications are shown as follows:
DC output: 30V/20A.
AC Input:400V/50HZ.
Control range of reference electric potential:-3V-0V (for long-term copper/copper
sulfate reference electrode).
Check carefully specifications,models,logos of power supply and other kinds of

cables,only after confirmation,wiring can begin.
An anode cable and a cathode cable shall be jointed through,copper lug plate and the
corresponding binding post of the control cabinet respectively,and be fixed with copper
nut.It is strictly prohibited to have reverse cathode and anode polarity.
The reference cable connects with the input terminal of potentiostat signal.The
grounding terminal of potentiostat should be joined with the outdoor grounding electrode.
4.5.2 Installation of Grid anode system
The conductive titanium strip was laid 1.5m on both sides from the center line of the
tank bottom. The distance between each conductive titanium is 3m.The distance between
conductive titanium and ring beam is 150 ~ 200mm.The MMO anode was laid vertically
with conductive titanium sheet.The anode was laid 0.45m on both sides from the center line
of the tank bottom. The distance between each anode ribbon is 0.9m.The distance between
anode ribbon and ring beam is 150 ~ 200mm.
Anode ribbons and conducting strips shall be laid naturally,and it is prohibited to
stretch or drag on the sand cushion,the anode ribbons and conducting strips shall be welded
firmly by spot welding and there shall be at least 2 welding points on each connection joint,
conducting strips are required to be placed under anode ribbons.and anode ribbon is not
allowed to have a joint.Anode should be laid in the middle of the thick sand cushion.The
length error is less than100 mm.
The anode cable joint shall be welded with the titanium conducting strip and
numbered as per designed position of anode busbar system,there shall be at least 5 welding
points on each joint and the anode cable shall be and recorded and marked.
4.5.3 Connection of Cables
Cathodic protection cable specifications are as follows:
Anode bus cable YJV62-1kv/1×16mm2;
Cathodecable YJV62-1kv/1×16mm2;
Testing cable YJV62-1kv/1×10mm2;
Reference cable KVVRP -2×2.5mm2
All cables shall go through reserved wire holes on the ring beam and shall be laid
down and buried underground to explosion -proof junction box,test piles.The cables length
should have en ough margin to prevent tensile fracture in case of foundation sinkage.
4.5.4 Installation of explosion-proof junction box

The explosion-proof junction box are installed 1.5m from the tank wall, the
distance between them is 1m.
4.5.5 Installation of reference electrode
The reference electrode are required to soak for 24 hours in a copper sulfate solution
before installation,they are installed in the middle of packing bag, packing bag should be
closely integrated with the reference electrode, the reference electrode shall be installed in
the sand cushion and located about 50mm above the grid anode system. The reference
electrode should be protected during installation in order to avoid the damage of reference
electrode,and it shall be installed according to the designed position.
4.5.6 Connection point and test point
A connection point and a test point shall be set up for each tank,which is placed in
somewhere near the explosion-proof junction box and test pile(such as the edge of the tank
bottom),the cathode、zero position cable and test cable should be connected with tank body
by thermit welding. Epoxy resin shall be used for sealing after welding,and the weld seams
shall be applied to the same anticorrosive and insulation treaments as the tank body.
