CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, significance

of the study, scope and delimitation, conceptual framework and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner Dictionary, 5th ed, 1995, the term “lateness”

implies a situation where an individual arrives after the proper, scheduled, or usual time.

Furthermore, Lauby (2009) put it as term used to describe “people not showing up on time”.

Breezes et al. (2010) contributed by saying that lateness is synonymous to “tardiness” which

implies being slow to act or slow to respond, thus not meeting up with roper or usual timing.

Tardiness is one of the observable problems of students especially high school student

here in Rosales National High School, Rosales Pangasinan. When a student is tardy, they

negatively impact their classmates as well as their teachers. Tardiness, if left unchecked can lead

to a habit and worst, can cause serious systematic problems. In case of a tardy student arriving

late in class, he or she wouldn’t have enough time to relax and to get organized with the lesson or

maybe that student probably wouldn’t go to class anymore and be absent.

Therefore , the researchers decided to conduct this study entitled “FACTORS

AFFECTING THE TARDINES OF GRADE-9 STUDENTS OF ROSALES NATIONAL HIGH

SCHOOL SY 2016-2017” for us to be aware what are the causes of being tardy of most student

and in order for the students to fully understand the importance of punctuality and how it

connects to their future working lives.

Conceptual Framework

This study is concerned on the extent of the factors affecting tardiness of Grade 9

students of Rosales National High School. The extent of awareness on the importance of being

on time and the effective solutions to prevent tardiness are also aimed to be determined.

Statement of the Problem

This study intended to determine the factors affecting tardiness of student of Rosales

National High School. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the extent of the factors affecting tardiness of Grade-9 students of Rosales National

High School?
2. What is the extent of awareness of Grade-9 students of Rosales National High School on the

importance of being on time?

3. What is the extent of the effective solutions to prevent tardiness of Grade-9 students of

Rosales National High School?

Significance of the Study

This study may provide information regarding in knowing the factors affecting tardiness

of students. It may also provide additional information for the students to fully understand the

importance of punctuality and how it connects to their future working lives. Lastly, this study

will also serve as basis in the improvement of other studies regarding the main topic of this

study. Specifically, this research will be significant to the following:

1. Students- They will be able to know the different factors that affects their tardiness, and

different solutions in order to avoid lateness. They will also have the opportunity to know

the importance of being on time specially in classes.

2. Parents- As support of the students, this research will provide different solutions for the

parents in order to fully guide their children specially on their tardiness.

3. Teachers- They might be able to give other solutions or think of some regulations to be

conducted in classrooms.

4. Future researchers- this research can be used as basis or related literature for other related

topics and researches.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will only focus on the factors affecting the tardiness of students of Rosales

National High School (RNHS). The awareness of the students on the importance of being on

time and the effective solutions to prevent tardiness is also aimed to be determined.

This study is limited only in using the Grade 9 students of RNHS S.Y. 2016-2017. The

respondents are randomly selected and answers are conveniently collected with the aid of a

questionnaire.
