My work as an educator is focused on developing academic resources that will empower

students to achieve reading and spelling success. I truly hope that you find this resource
to be useful in the heroic work you do with our students every day.

As educators, we know that each child is unique and finding the right keys to unlock
learning for all students is best achieved when we work as a team.

Recognizing that we are all part of the same team, please feel free to contact me via

This Reading Intervention is designed to provide students in grades 3 and
above the opportunity to close their reading and spelling gaps quickly
while building a solid, systematic foundation in all letter sounds and vowel
combinations.

Each Unit Includes: An explicit approach to re-teaching phonics

Phonics mats that correspond to CVC, consonant blends and two-three

syllable words to accelerate the learning process and close upper grade
students’ reading gaps quickly and efficiently. These mats can be easily
inserted into any 3-ringed binder or folder.

“Sort and Spell” pages for each vowel sound that provide students with the
opportunity to sort the words they have just read according to their
vowel sounds, thereby enabling them to correctly spell each word.

Vowel cards that correspond to each of the sounds included in the unit. I
provide each student a set of vowel cards, laminated and attached with a
book ring. That way they have them handy for each lesson and when they
are involved in other reading tasks throughout the day.
*I use a two-pocket, three-pronged folder to hold
the Phonics Mats for each student in my group.
Copy Phonics Cards on cardstock, laminate for
durability and place on a binder ring. This way,
students will have them handy for each lesson and
when they are involved in other reading tasks
throughout the day.

*I create the same folder for myself, except I use

the Teacher Planning Sort & Spell pages so I can
collect spelling words as we progress through each
unit.

Phonics Cards:
Start each lesson with a vowel sound review using the phonics cards. I point to each letter
and say, “The letter sound for A is…….and the symbol (or picture) is ………?”. After you initially
model the sound, the students should answer chorally. Only stop and guide them when they are
unsure of the sound. Then, you may want to reverse the direction and ask what the symbol is
first, before the sound.
Phonics Mats:
Each vowel combination is divided into three sections:

*The first two pages consist of one

syllable words. Ask students to underline
the vowel sound in each word with a
colored pencil. Then I use the following
script…..”The vowel sound is…..The word
is….?”

*The third and sometimes fourth pages

consist of 2+ syllable words. Again, ask
students to underline the vowel in each
syllable. Then I use the following script,
The first part of the word is……the second
part of the word is…..the word is?” I also
like to teach the students to loop the
different parts of the word with their
colored pencil to reinforce the
blending strategy.
Spelling Activities: (Spell and Sort)
Use the pages I’ve provided to teach your students to sort the words you dictate
according to their syllables and sounds. There are no established spelling words
chosen for each vowel sound.

Spelling Page 1-SOUNDS

*For the first spelling activity, sorting by
vowel sound, choose any words you like to
measure spelling skills. First, dictate the
word in its entirety. Then ask the
students to repeat the word back to you.

Spelling Page 2-SYLLABLES

*For the second spelling activity, sorting by
syllables, you’ll ask how many syllables
your students hear, to reinforce how
many vowels they will have to include in
their spelling of this word. Then, dictate
each syllable as the students spell the
words.

I recommend providing your students access to their vowel cards for

each spelling activity to reinforce the sound-symbol connection we aim
to establish.
