Narrative Report on the Reskills webinar “Let’s Sharpen Your English Fluency”

ReSkills provide free webinar to all students, teachers, and anyone who are
interested to learn about different topics that they cover. This webinar was conducted
live via ReSkills live-learning platform. It is a 75-minute leaning session that focuses on
how to sharpen and improve students’ fluency using the English language.
The webinar started at exactly 2:50pm in the afternoon, everyone is encouraged
to watch the live and participate in the session. It started with some reminders from
ReSkills, the etiquette during the session, and the introduction of the speaker. Ma’am
Dolly Gandhi is the speaker for the learning session. She defined fluency, the two types
of fluency which is the physical and mental fluency, and the strategies that a person can
use in order to improve his/her English fluency.
Also, ma’am Gandhi gave an icebreaker for us to enjoy and that is the tongue
twister challenge. I myself enjoyed it and I did not got bored about the learning session
especially it was happened during nap time.
Ma’am Gandhi talked about how fluency can be sharpened and there are
elements for this. First is the knowledge, you need to read and browse books, watch
and listen in order to have knowledge as to how you will enunciate words. Second is
practice, you need to speak and have conversations with your colleagues in order to
practice your fluency. As they say, practice makes perfect. And the third element is
confidence, though it is hard to have that confidence especially when you’re not a native
speaker of the English language, you can develop that confidence with some strategies
such as recording your voice and listening to it, practicing in front of the mirror, having
conversation with your friends, watching Hollywood movies, and most importantly reflect
on your skills and how you can improve it.
The session only lasts for an hour and 15 minutes but I can say that it is a big
help for every student who are struggling in using the English language in an actual
conversation and having a hard time pronouncing words and interpreting those words in
a sentence especially when your interlocutor speaks fast and slang. Fluency cannot be
measured by just speaking the English language words, phrases, or sentences. It is the
ability to comprehend what is said and being accurate for what word you are going to
use. Also, it is your skill on how you are going to deliver your thoughts articulately and
effortless.
