Dear Students and Parents,

On Monday April 30th and Tuesday May 1st we will have the opportunity to take 40
eighth grade students from McCord on a two day science field trip to OSU’s Stone Laboratory
on Gibraltar Island in Lake Erie. Activities and learning opportunities will include gathering
aquatic specimens from a laboratory boat and from shore, studying invertebrates, dissecting
fish, and participating in classes on invasive plant and animal species. In addition, students
will visit various historic landmarks on South Bass Island. Please feel free to visit the website

Since only a limited number of students can be accommodated at Stone Lab, we are
inviting those who have demonstrated a high interest in science without discipline referrals
this year to apply. Students who are interested in being considered, must complete the
attached application and submit it to their science teacher by Friday, March 16th. Science
teachers will meet to select participants and inform the participants by March 20th.
.
In order to prepare for this trip, OSU requires that students have some background
information and have gone over policies and procedures. All participants will need to attend
two school meeting sessions that will be conducted by McCord science teachers during
Advisory time prior to the trip. Important trip information will be discussed and attendance
is mandatory.

Students will be transported by charter bus to Catawba Point. They will take a ferry to
South Bass Island where a smaller OSU research boat will take them to Gibraltar Island.
Participants will have their meals on the island and spend the night in OSU dormitory facilities.
Teachers from McCord will accompany the students on the trip.

The cost of the trip for each student will be approximately $195.00. This amount
includes meals, lodging, all transportation, utilization of OSU laboratory facilities and
instruction fees for OSU. Applicants who are accepted will receive an acceptance letter with
the exact cost and will be expected to pay online or by check by Friday, April 13th..
