Experimental study on fly ash concrete composite reinforced with

Nano-SiO2 and Steel fibre

Abstract – Concrete is the most commonly used construction material in the globe. In recent
years, researchers have attentive on the upgrading of concrete quality regarding its mechanical
and durability properties. These can be achieved by the application of the supplementary
cementitious materials like fly ash, silica fume, granulated blast furnace slag and steel slag etc…
The use of large quantity of cement products increasing co2 emissions and significance the green
house effect. Nano Technology is one of the most promising areas of science. The use of nano
materials in concrete is novel revolution. Nanomaterials like nano silica, nano titanium oxide,
carbon nano tubes, nano alumina etc… which are presently used in concrete to modify its strength
properties. A experimental study has been conducted to study the effect of nano-SiO2 particles and
steel fibres on the mechanical properties of the concrete composite containing fly ash. In this
paper five different nano-SiO2 contents (1%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 9%) as partial replacement of cement
were studied and five different steel fibre contents (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5%) were used. The
properties taken for analysis were fresh, hardened and durable. Slump test and slump flow test
were employed to study the fresh properties. The durability of concrete has been determined
through compressive strength test and compressive modulus of elasticity test. A comparative
study was carried out for conventional concrete and nano concrete. The test results were analyzed
and presented in the tables and figures.
