Ferdinand Magellan's
Background
Antonio Pigafetta
-known by the name of Antonio
Lombardo or Francisco Antonio
Pigafetta

-born in a wealthy family from the


city of Vicenza around 1490 and
died in 1534 in the same city.

-He studied Geography,
Astronomy and Cartography

-He served on board the galleys


of the Knights of Rhodes in the
16th Century.

-Later on joined the expedition to
Moluccas Islands (Spice Islands) led
by the Portuguese Captain Ferdinand
Magellan.

- During the expedition Pigafetta


served Magellan as his assistant.

-Pigafetta was one of the 18 men
who made the complete trip,
returning to Spain in 1522.

-He had hand-written of an


accurate journal of "The First
voyage around the World".

-died on April 27, 1521 in the


Kingdom of Mactan

-his first sea voyage was in 1505
when Portugal sent him to India to
help install Francisco de Almeida
as the Portuguese viceroy and
experienced his first battle there in
1509.

persuaded Charles I and then
granted him a large sum of
money to find a route to the
Spice Islands.

the Spice Islands.

- Magellan was often credited with


the first circumnavigation of the
Earth as he initially led the voyage.
The 5 ships that
were used in the
Voyage
The Armada de Molucca was
the name of the fleet led by
Ferdinand Magellan in an
attempt to find the Spice
Islands. It consisted of five
ships, Magellan's flagship
Trinidad, the provision ship
San Antonio, and the smaller
ships Concepcion, Victoria,
and Santiago.
SANTIAGO
• The smallest of the five ships in
Ferdinand Magellan's fleet
• Crew: 32
• Under the command of Juan
Serrano
• The ship that was wrecked off
the coast of Patagonia.
SAN ANTONIO
• The first carrack to
circumnavigate the globe.
• Crew: 60
• Under the command of Juan De
Cartagena
• The largest of the five ships in
Ferdinand Magellan's fleet and
the most expensive.
TRINIDAD
• One of two ships to achieve their
goal of reaching the Maluku
Islands.
• Crew: 55
• Under the command of Ferdinand
Magellan
• The Trinidad was the flag ship of
Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet in its
expedition for the Spice Islands.
CONCEPCION
• The Nao Concepción was the
third-largest ship in Ferdinand
Magellan’s fleet in tonnage.
• Crew: 43
• Under the command of Gaspar
de Quesada
• The carrack they had to
sacrifice due to a lack of crew in
Cebu.
VICTORIA
• The only ship to complete the
voyage
• Second-smallest of the five ships
of Armada de Molucca
• Crew: 43
• Under the command of Luiz
Mendoza; soon led by Juan
Sebastian Elcano

expedition of Francisco d'Almeida
to India.

• Took part in the Portuguese
expedition to Morocco and
was badly wounded.

• Has a serious disagreement
with a commanding officer
and leaves the service
without prior permission.

• Request permission from King
Manuel of Portugal to sail to the
Spice islands in the Far East but is
refused, following the
unfavourable reports from
Morocco.

• Resumes his studies in portugal
(For couple more years yet fails to
gain favor with the Portuguese
court and therefore renounce his
Portuguese nationality)

• Magellan leaves Portugal and
heads for Spain.

• March 22: Magellan convinces
King Charles I of Spain to Support
his Voyage to the Spice Islands
and the King promises Magellan
one-fifth of the profits from the
voyage to the spice islands.

expedition.
• Magellan commands the Trinidad.
• Juan de Cartagena commands the
San Antonio.

winter at Puerto san Julian in
Southern Argentina.

destroys the Santiago and a
mutiny breaks out.

• October: Ferdinand
Magellan and his crew
resume their voyage on the
remaining ships.

• 21 November: Enters the
straits which would be named
the magellan Straits becoming
the 1st Europeans ever to sail
across the Pacific Ocean.

magellan reaches the
Equator.

reached the Pacific

the Philippines.
