To receive the Promises the Blessed Virgin
assigned certain conditions which must be
fulfilled when wearing the Brown Scapular:
1.Wear the Brown Scapular
continuously.
2.Observe chastity according to one’s
state in life (married/single).
3.Recite daily the Little Office of the
Blessed Virgin ;
OR Observe the fasts of the Church
together with abstaining from meat on
Wednesdays and Saturdays
OR With permission of a priest, say five
decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy
Rosary
OR With permission of a priest,
substitute some other good work.

Wearing the Scapular is a Sign to the
Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of
our Blessed Virgin Mother Mary.
Oral tradition tells of St. Simon Stock praying
with a passionate intensity to Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel during a time of great distress and
hardship for the Order. With fervor and faith, he
prayed for the first time the Flos Carmeli prayer
which he wrote. And Our Lady answered that
prayer.

O beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine,
Splendor of Heaven, holy and singular,
who brought forth the Son of God,
still ever remaining a Pure Virgin,
assist me in this necessity.
O Star of the sea, help and protect me!

 1. THE APPARATION OF OUR LADY
A Gift from your Heavenly Mother
History
In the year 1251, in the town of Aylesford in
England, Our Lady appeared to St. Simon Stock, a
Carmelite. She handed him a brown woolen scapular
and said, “This shall be a privilege for you and all
Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall
not suffer eternal fire.” In time, the Church
extended this magnificent privilege to all the laity
who are willing to be invested in the Brown Scapular
of the Carmelites and who perpetually wear it.
Devotion
True devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary consists in
three things: VENERATION, CONFIDENCE AND
LOVE. By simply wearing the Scapular, we can tell
her every moment of the day that we venerate her,
love her and trust in her protection.
MARY'S PROMISE TO THOSE WHO WEAR
THE SCAPULAR
Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the
Carmelites with the following promise, saying
: Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy
order: this shall be to thee and to all
Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies
clothed in this shall never suffer eternal
fire .... It shall be a sign of salvation, a
protection in danger, and a pledge of
peace.
The Sabbatine Privilege
Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is
the Sabbatine Privilege. This concerns a promise
made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In a papal
letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had.
He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in
this vision, concerning those who wear the Brown
Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on
the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I
shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may

lead them to the holy mountain of life
everlasting."
VALUE AND MEANING OF THE SCAPULAR
Many popes and saints have strongly recommended
wearing, the Brown Scapular to the Catholic Faithful,
including St. Robert Bellarmine, Pope John XXII,
Pope Pius Xl, and Pope Benedict XV. For example,
St. Alphonsus said: "Just as men take pride in
having others wear their livery, so the Most Holy
Mary is pleased when Her servants wear Her
Scapular as a mark that they have dedicated
themselves to Her service, and are members of the
Family of the Mother of God."Pope Pius XII went
so far as to say: "The Scapular is a practice of piety
which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone,
and has spread widely among the faithful of
Christ to their spiritual profit." In our own times,
Pope Paul VI said: "Let the faithful hold in high
esteem the practices and devotions to the Blessed
Virgin ... the Rosary and the Scapular of Carmel"
and in another place referred to the Scapular as:
"so highly recommended by our illustrious
predecessors.
