MALIK
I have never been a religious person, even after the truth about
our heritage came out. If anything it pushed me further away
from this idea of having one omnipotent force.
But even so, I had been praying this day wouldn’t come. I would
sit in my bed at night, staying up after my partners were asleep and
just hope that the world would show some type of mercy…but I
should have known by now that wasn’t how the world worked.
Even when I expected the worst, that didn’t stop the pain.
It was eleven o’clock at night and I had finally convinced Daxton,
Amr, and Rae to leave me with Amber for her possibly last night on
this earth.
Eli and Malik were, of course, off doing god knows what so that
left me all to myself for the time being. And while I could feel the
loneliness that permeated my soul…I also felt a sort of relief.
I was truly alone now. The only time where I could fully indulge
my thoughts, even the darkest ones that tried to hide in the recesses
of my mind during the day.
There were no medic witches about, and everyone was sound
asleep except the sliver-haired girl that lay in front of me, shivering
under the mountain of blankets she was wearing.
I do not know why this patient was the one that was threatening
to break me, but it felt like claws were gripping at my throat and
squeezing the life out of me as I watched over her. I couldn’t move,
couldn’t breathe, all I could do was just sit by her side and watch as
the parts of her soul wasted away.
“Amber,” I croaked out and reached under the blanket to cover
her cold hands.
I knew that even if I tried to ease up her pain, there would be no
change. It was far too close to the end for her.
“Hey, love,” she whispered, her eyes blinking open. “I am glad
you are here with me.”
I swallowed thickly and squeezed her limp hand, willing it to
squeeze mine back.
“Of course,” I said. “Anything for you.”
She let out a sound that was akin to a laugh but sounded more
like a rough cough as it wracked her small frame. It was painful to
watch.
“It’s the end, love,” she said.
“I know.”
“They knew this would happen,” she continued. “That we would
die, yet they still didn’t let us leave.”
“Why?” I asked finally, the questions that had been circling my
head were screaming at me to get them answered.
“I thought they were trying to save us,” she said. “But now I just
see that they wanted to control us. They were scared we would
revolt if we learned of the outside world. Learned that there was
nothing to fear. Not even them.”
I gritted my teeth, begging the tears that were gathering not to
fall. I needed to be strong for her.
“I don’t get why they would do it,” I said honestly.
“Because they are not royalty here,” she said and let out another
laugh. “But in there, they were gods. They were the almighty people
who had saved us from the power-hungry humans that threatened
our existence. Though they didn’t want us to realize that it wasn’t
them that held the power anymore, but ordinary people like us.
They didn’t want them to know we didn’t need them.”
“Save your strength,” I said as another coughing fit ran through
her. I was so afraid she would break right then and there and I still
had the foolish hope that she could live through this. That small
hope hung between us like a glowing thread, but it was thin and
torn… It was at the end of its life.
“There is nothing to save,” she said and then with strength I
didn’t know she possessed she jerked me forward, our faces inches
apart. “Gather the healthiest of us, love. I have a feeling something
bad will happen and you need to get them out.”
I shook my head.
“They are being relocated already, don’t worry about this,” I
whispered. “I will watch over them.”
The sigh that escaped her lips seemed to carry the weight of the
universe with it.
“And take care of yourself too, Rosie,” she whispered. “I cannot
tell you how much it means for you to stay by my side all this time.”
I watched in horror as her eyes closed and the light grip she had
on my hand loosened.
I don’t know how long I waited in that cramped space, pleading
for her to take another breath, but when my form started shaking
under the pressure of the awkward position I was forced to sit back
up and look once more at her shell of a body.
The tears silently fell down my cheeks.
“Please,” I whispered. “Please come back.”
There was no answer. Her body remained still and my magic
spread out, trying to feel for something, any type of vibration to
indicate a life…but there was none.
My magic was threatening to tear down the entire building, it
was begging for me to let it out, gnashing and snarling against the
shell it was caged in. The only thing holding me together was that
people, just like Amber, littered the places beside me and I couldn’t
bear to see them hurt.
Swallowing my sobs I put a magical barrier around her cot and
with a single thought, I burned the body until there was nothing but
soot in its place.
I had done this so many other times that I didn’t even have to
think about cleaning up the leftover debris with magic and slowly
standing up to leave my spot amongst the sleeping people.
As I walked I saw a few glowing eyes peering out at me, but I
couldn’t hold their stare.
They saw what happened, they knew everything.
When I finally was able to force myself down the empty hallways
of Winterfell, I found myself unable to catch my breath. It felt like
the air had been knocked out of my chest and the sobs that I had
been hiding from the sleeping bodies forced their way out of my
mouth.
I was devastated about Amber, about all the others…but all I
could think of was…why?
Why did this have to happen?
Why did they have to die in a world where anything was
possible?
Why didn’t I feel this way about the others I killed? The witches
in the town? Daxton’s parents?
Why didn’t it hurt then? Why is this so different?
I leaned against the wall and let myself slowly fall to the ground;
the cold tiles acted as a perfect way to calm my racing brain.
I felt his presence before I heard him. The sounds of his shoes
padding across the stoned floors echoed through the hallways and
his warm hands found my shoulder first. He pulled me to him and
whispered in my ear.
I looked at him through my tear-filled eyes, seeing a familiar grey
set of eyes and red curly hair.
Matt, what perfect fucking timing.
I threw my arms around his neck.
“I know it’s hard,” he whispered against me. “But you did all that
you could.”
“Where were you hiding?” I asked through my sobs. My hand
found the side of his neck and I leaned back to look him in the eyes
once more.
He sent me that famous sheepish smile of his before answering.
“Just down this hallway,” he admitted. “I’m on Rosie duty
tonight.”
I smiled at him through my sobs. I wasn’t planning to do this
tonight, but this moment was too perfect. No one was in sight.
“I know.”
He lifted a brow and tilted his head to the side.
He played such a good puppy, I thought.
“You know?” he asked.
I nodded and called my magic into my palm. He stiffened when
he finally felt the swirling magic against his skin, the same magic
that was threatening to burn a hole in the side of his neck.
He swallowed, his throat coming dangerously close to the magic
in my palm. His eyes widened and then another second passed
before his eyes narrowed at me. No longer did I get to see my best
and only friend at Winterfell, instead I got an eyeful of the real
person Matt was.
“What gave me away?” he asked.
His whole demeanor changed in that moment, and into a person
that I didn’t recognize, but one that I knew intimately. I had seen
the change happen, even if I wasn’t fully aware it was happening. It
was in the little things, the way he fought with Eli, the way his eye
would narrow when he thought no one was looking.
I knew the type of person this was because I had done the
same. It was a front to keep people from knowing what was really
going on.
For me it was the Originals’ task… And for him…
I cannot afford to be kept in the dark any longer.
“You think that when I already was missing a day in my memory
I wouldn’t take precautions?” I asked.
It was a half lie. I didn’t take any precautions and relied only on
luck and my intuition and a single person on my side.
As the bright light blinded me I fell to the ground, acting as if I
was affected by the magic that Matt threw at me. My heart was
pounding and I could still hear the roaring of the flames in the
background.
“I will take her back,” Eli said from afar.
“I will be faster,” Claudine’s sweet voice said from right near me.
I could already feel her hands across my back, rubbing in soothing
motions. “We will meet you at the apartment.”
Without another moment to waste I felt the same stomach
pulling sensations and then the cool ground beneath me.
“You did good,” she whispered.
I finally sat up to notice that we were not far from the ruins of
Winterfell tower. The cool night breeze seeped into my body and I
couldn’t help the shudders.
“How did—I don’t under—”
She grabbed my hand and showed me the glowing symbol she
had left on me. It was smudged and barely visible to the naked eye.
“I had to act fast,” she said. “I knew as soon as you grabbed
onto me that most likely he would try and use his powers on you.”
“You helped me,” I said in a hollow voice. “Was he trying to take
my memories?”
Panic rose in my chest when she nodded.
“How many times?” I asked. She gave me a pitying look.
“I know of four, but I suspect more,” she answered.
“Four?” I whispered and cupped my hand over my mouth. “I
thought it was only once.” I felt like I was going to be sick.
Who was this person? How did I miss this?
“Listen, Rosie,” she said hurriedly. “We don’t have time. I need to
teach you how to protect yourself.”
She slipped my hand over and I watched as she drew an intricate
symbol into my palm with purple glowing magic.
“Remember this symbol. I did it for you before, but remember it
for next time,” she said. “If you think he will use it, draw this symbol
somewhere on your body with magic and you will be fine. Better yet
if you can get it tattooed. Do it.”
“How did you figure out..?”
She gave me a sad smile and I couldn’t help but feel pity for the
little girl that had to grow up around a memory manipulator.
“Will it uncover what he has done before?” I asked.
She gave me a sad smile.
“Only he can do that,” she answered.
“Thank you, Claudine,” I whispered.
“It’s my pleasure, though to be honest Marques was the one that
suggested it,” she said with a smile of her own. “Now let’s take care
of those pesky mind readers.”
I did exactly as she had recommended and went to the same
tattoo artist with Daxton and Amr and made us all get matching
tattoos. They had asked many questions, but dropped it when I told
them to just trust me. I had yet to bring it up to Rae and Eli as they
had both been absent and would probably have a run-in or two with
people that could do harm with this information.
It was sad to think about how little trust was between us now,
but I had to do this to not only keep myself alive…but all the people
around me as well.
Matt’s jaw clenched and I watched as he thought through all of
his options, his eyes scanning every inch of me.
“What do you want?” he asked after a pause.
“Take me to him,” I demanded.
A smirk spread across his face.
“To who?”
I pushed the orb of magic into his neck and watched as his face
flushed and pain spread across his expression. He let out a groan,
but did not give in.
I pushed the orb in harder.
“Fine,” he grunted. “But I have to call my sister.”
“Do it,” I hissed. “Now.”
He patted his pockets for his phone and typed out a message to
her.
I didn’t know what it said, but I didn’t need to. She warned me
about this earlier today, it was the whole reason I was here so late
anyways.
She appeared in a flash of light and looked down at us with an
unamused expression.
“What a precarious—”
“Shut up and do as you are told,” Matt hissed at her.
For good measure I pushed the ball further into his neck.
Claudine’s lips twitched and she placed a hand on us both.
This time I was prepared for the feeling of my stomach being
turned inside out. When the light subsided I was hit with a chill
before I saw the massive space we were in. We were in what looked
to be a ballroom, but the interior seemed darker, more mysterious
than those ones I had seen on TV growing up.
Claudine gave no rest; she disappeared in a flash of light.
Matt used that chance, and my moment of distraction, to push
me to the ground as he straddled either side of my hips. I felt a thick
rope-like object wrap around my wrists and force my arms over my
head. I looked towards them to catch sight of thick vines that made
their way down my arms as if they had minds of their own.
I glared at Matt and he met me with a smirk.
“Not so tough now, are you?” he asked. I felt the vines slip into
my clothing and wrap around my body much like I imagined a giant
snake would.
“You don’t scare me,” I said in a defiant tone.
“No?” he asked. “I can be very scary if given free rein.”
I kept his stare down. There was no way I would be scared of
him, I wouldn’t allow myself to even as the vines wrapped around
me and began squeezing my body.
I saw the flash of light over Matt’s head and smiled before
lighting the vines on fire in one burst. The ones that had snaked
through my clothing fell limp and Matt frowned when he realized
what happened.
He sat up and looked over at the very people we were waiting
for. Right next to Claudine’s form stood the man that single-handedly
saved me from dying at the hands of the Originals because of my
failed task.
He stood tall and dressed in a sweater that hugged his body and
loose slacks. His dark hair fell in his eyes and he had scruff on his
face. His dead eyes looked over the two of us without any indication
of his emotions.
“I heard you took a little hostage,” he said, a smirk finally
spreading across his face.
“Little indeed,” I scoffed and sat up only to push Matt off me. I
could tell he allowed it for the second because as soon as I stood,
he had my wrist in a death grip.
“Don’t get too comfortable,” Matt hissed behind me.
“I should say that to you,” I hissed at him.

BEZIGHEDEN
GESCHIEDENISSEN
