Abstract for Anesthesia

Federal regulations and guidelines mandate that animals undergoing potentially painful
procedures should be provided with adequate anesthesia and analgesia. A variety of drugs
are given to the animal that have different effects with the overall aim of ensuring
unconsciousness, amnesia and analgesia. Selection of a suitable anesthetic agent which
has property of smooth induction maintenance & recovery, not only ensure controlled
and reversible irregular paralysis of the CNS, but also improve the success rate of
surgery. Anesthetic dose protocol cannot of strictly generalized for all animals, even
similar animals of a species have different response to a dose protocol of anesthetics.
Thus in-depth knowledge of the Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics of commonly
used anesthetics is required to minimize the casualties during the process of anesthesia.

This module will be about dose protocol and general properties of commonly used pre-
anesthetics / anesthetics / analgesics, suitable combination of two or more agents,
antidote and common toxicity of these agents. SOP for preparation of aseptic surgical site
and common aseptic agents will be discussed.
