REVISION HISTORY
SUBJECT: LANDING GEAR - Main Landing Gear - Forward and Aft Trunnion Pin Assemblies
Inspection and Change
CONCURRENT REQUIREMENTS
None.
BACKGROUND
This service bulletin is sent to make sure the left and right Main Landing Gear (MLG) forward and aft trunnion
pin assemblies and the components related to the MLG forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies remain
serviceable. Corrosion and chrome damage has been found on some of these components. If this service bulletin
is not done, corrosion and chrome plate damage on these components could cause the MLG forward and aft
trunnion pin assemblies to crack which could result in a MLG collapse.
Several operators have reported heavy corrosion and pitting of the MLG forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies.
Boeing found a number of causes for this damage which include insufficient lubrication, joint contamination and
mixed greases. It was found that the lubrication between the forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies and the
outer cylinder assembly bushings and the lubrication of the aft trunnion bearing ball was not sufficient to prevent
wear and corrosion. It was also found that the clearances between the forward and aft trunnion pin cross bolt
bushings and the cross bolts could affect the rate of wear and corrosion of MLG trunnion pin assemblies. To
correct these problems, Boeing has changed the design of the outer cylinder forward and aft trunnion bushings
to improve lubrication around the outer diameter of the forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies and changed
the design of aft trunnion bearing split ball to add a circumferential lube groove and larger diameter through
holes which improves lubrication around the aft pin at the interface with the aft trunnion bearing. In addition
Boeing has changed the design of the forward and aft trunnion pin cross bolt bushings for the trunnion pins to
reduce relative motion of each pin within the outer cylinder assembly bushings and reduce wear.
Accomplishment of this service bulletin lubricates and inspects existing MLG forward and aft trunnion pin
assemblies at regular intervals to prevent damage and corrosion. Instructions are given to overhaul or replace
damaged or corroded forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies. In addition, instructions are provided to install
new forward and aft trunnion bushings in the MLG outer cylinder assembly, install new trunnion pin cross bolt
bushings in the forward and aft trunnion pins, install a new/changed aft trunnion bearing ball, install a new/changed
aft trunnion bearing race, and install a new forward trunnion pin housing assembly seal and retainer configuration
on applicable airplanes. Installation of the new trunnion bushings in the MLG outer cylinder assembly,
new/changed aft trunnion bearing ball and aft trunnion bearing race are the terminating actions to the repeat
lubrication and repeat inspections given in this service bulletin and will improve grease distribution which will
reduce wear in the joint and prevent corrosion.
Boeing recommends to do this service bulletin at the same time as 737-32-1376 or 737-32-1402 if applicable.

C. Reason
This service bulletin is sent to make sure the left and right Main Landing Gear (MLG) forward and aft
trunnion pin assemblies and the components related to the MLG forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies
remain serviceable. Corrosion and chrome damage has been found on some of these components. If
this service bulletin is not done, corrosion and chrome plate damage on these components could cause
the MLG forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies to crack which could result in a MLG collapse.
Several operators have reported heavy corrosion and pitting of the MLG forward and aft trunnion pin
assemblies. Boeing found a number of causes for this damage which include insufficient lubrication,
joint contamination and mixed greases. It was found that the lubrication between the forward and aft
trunnion pin assemblies and the outer cylinder assembly bushings and the lubrication of the aft trunnion
bearing ball was not sufficient to prevent wear and corrosion. It was also found that the clearances
between the forward and aft trunnion pin cross bolt bushings and the cross bolts could affect the rate
of wear and corrosion of MLG trunnion pin assemblies. To correct these problems, Boeing has changed
the design of the outer cylinder forward and aft trunnion bushings to improve lubrication around the
outer diameter of the forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies and changed the design of aft trunnion
bearing split ball to add a circumferential lube groove and larger diameter through holes which improves
lubrication around the aft pin at the interface with the aft trunnion bearing. In addition Boeing has
changed the design of the forward and aft trunnion pin cross bolt bushings for the trunnion pins to
reduce relative motion of each pin within the outer cylinder assembly bushings and reduce wear.
Accomplishment of this service bulletin lubricates and inspects existing MLG forward and aft trunnion
pin assemblies at regular intervals to prevent damage and corrosion. Instructions are given to overhaul
or replace damaged or corroded forward and aft trunnion pin assemblies. In addition, instructions are
provided to install new forward and aft trunnion bushings in the MLG outer cylinder assembly, install
new trunnion pin cross bolt bushings in the forward and aft trunnion pins, install a new/changed aft
trunnion bearing ball, install a new/changed aft trunnion bearing race, and install a new forward trunnion
pin housing assembly seal and retainer configuration on applicable airplanes. Installation of the new
trunnion bushings in the MLG outer cylinder assembly, new/changed aft trunnion bearing ball and aft
trunnion bearing race are the terminating actions to the repeat lubrication and repeat inspections given
in this service bulletin and will improve grease distribution which will reduce wear in the joint and prevent
corrosion.
Boeing recommends to do this service bulletin at the same time as 737-32-1376 or 737-32-1402 if
applicable.
Boeing Service Related Problem (SRP) 737-SRP-32-0165 is related to this service bulletin.
Boeing Fleet Team Digest (FTD) 737NG FTD 32-09001 is related to this service bulletin.
