Perhaps it's easy to see why some people think this — octopuses have large
heads, eight limbs, and they can even change color.
We may not know for sure if they're from outer space, but many will agree
that octopuses are very interesting sea animals.
And two-thirds of an octopus' neurons are found in its arms — meaning each
arm can do different things on its own, like it has its own small brain.
They can solve problems quickly, and have been known to use items they find
underwater as tools. Research has also found that they have very good long-
term and short-term memories.
Octopuses can also taste and smell using their arms, and if they lose one,
they can grow it again!
The word "octopus" comes from the Greek words okto , meaning "eight," and
pous , meaning "foot." But many scientists agree that an octopus uses its
eight limbs more like arms than feet.
While one heart may be enough for us, octopuses have three. Two of these
are used to move blood to the gills for oxygen, and the third and biggest
heart moves that blood around the body.
The big heart stops when an octopus is swimming, which is why octopuses
spend a lot of time walking — it's less tiring for them!
