Historical background The Commission drafted the first international conventions on women's rights, such as the 1953 Convention on the Political Rights of Women, which was the first instrument of international law to recognize and protect women's political rights; it was also responsible for drafting the first international agreements on women's rights in marriage, namely the 1957 Convention on the Nationality of Married Women and the 1962 Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage and Registration of Marriages. Cleo Kambugu • Cleo Kambugu is a Ugandan transgender woman fighting for equality for sexual and gender minorities. Today, her simple identity - as with other transgender, lesbian and bisexual women - can be considered a crime in Uganda. • Cleo is program director of UHAI EASHRI, an indigenous activist fund that supports sexual and gender minorities and sex workers. During the pandemic, while many services, including health services, remained closed to minority groups, her organization provided humanitarian assistance grants and ensured that "people were able to live with dignity during the crisis."
