1. GENERAL INFORMATION

1.1 LIFE SAVING SYSTEM

The life saving system is designed in the way that all necessary functions for
hoisting and lowering of the craft are fulfilled.
The system corresponds to the enclosed arrangement dwg.
This davit is suitable for launching a boat/raft including the full complement of
persons from the embarkation position to the water level. The survival craft is
slewed from the embarkation position to the lowering position by means of hydraulic
power system. The lowering procedure is performed due to gravity.
Both procedures, the slewing and lowering, can be controlled from either the winch
position, or within the craft.
The entry to the survival craft should be wide enough to handle a stretcher on,
carrying a wounded person.
Recovery of the craft is controlled from the elec. push button s/w on the davit.
By pushing the "hoisting" button, the boat can be lifted to the highest position.
By reaching this position, the elec. hoisting motor is switched off due to the limit
switch on the davit jib. Any remaining hoisting distance, for slewing purposes,
should be overcome by hoisting with the hand crank.
For bringing the craft to the inboard position, the davit can be slewed by means of
the hydraulic slewing motor, placed on the slewing hydraulic power pack. A hydraulic
control lever has been installed on the davit accordingly.

To assure a minimum of maintenance all shafts are of stainless steel. The sheaves
include life time lubricated bushes. This way further greasing is reduced to the
minimum. Accordingly, there is a possibility to mount grease nipples on the shafts.

2. LAUNCHING INSTRUCTIONS

To assure a safe and well-executed launching, for each davit system, an instruction
manual plate has been installed. This instruction manual plate, showing the exact
sequence of the launching procedure is placed near the embarkation position.
By following the instructions one by one safe launching is guaranteed. Nevertheless
the complete procedures for a safe launching and recovering will be reviewed in the
next paragraph.

3. RESCUE BOAT/LIFE RAFT LAUNCHING AND RECOVERY

3.1 LAUNCHING PROCEDURE

- Embarkation
- Open the cock-valve of the hydraulic power slewing system. After actuation of the
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

valve, the turning-out procedure should be continued as soon as possible.

- Lift the slewing control lever of the hand operated directional control valve,
for which two options are available :
1) From within the craft : pull firmly on the remote control grip. By actuating
the lever, the slewing continues up to the lowering position. The slewing stops
as soon as the actuation is discontinued.
2) From the davit : lift the lever by hand, stopping remains possible. The turning
-out procedure is only allowed with a crew in the craft of maximum 6 persons.
- Lift the brake lever of the winch, for which two options available :
1) From within the craft : pull firmly on the remote control grip, to start the
descend. Once properly activated the lowering will proceed until the craft is
waterborne.
2) From near the winch : lift the brake lever by hand;stopping is still possible.
By actuating the remote control lever by hand, the descend will be activated
and continued until the craft is waterborne.
- Start engine of survival craft, following the instructions of the boat builder.
- Release the boat/raft hook when waterborne.

3.2 RECOVERY PROCEDURE

- The recovery of any rescue boat is only allowed with a maximum 6 persons in the
boat.
- Make sure the wire rope falls contain slack and fasten the rescue boat hook in
the boat suspension.
- Switch on the main switch on the starter panel.
- Start hoisting from the R.P.B s/w box on the davit. Ensure each wire rope turn
remaining permanently on the winch drum to be kept close to the adjacent one
until rope slack is eliminated by rope tightening.
- When reaching the highest hoisting position the electric driven hoisting proce-
dure is automatically stopped by the limit switch on the davit jib.
- Check whether the hoisting wire has been spooled up as appropriate.
- Start slewing from the hydraulic power pack on the davit. Ensure no obstructions
block the path of the boat.
- Replace the boat on the boat chock; some additional cranking with the co-deliver-
ed hand crank might as possible.
- For preparing the craft for stowing, follow the instructiona as given in the man-
ual of the survival craft.
- Replace all protection covers.
- De-load the craft fall to a hand taut extend by slightly lifting the winch brake
lever.
- Check and, if necessary, switch on the standby heating on the various ele. parts.
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

4. REMOTE CONTROL

For activating the launching procedure from within the survival craft two remote
system have been foreseen :
1) Slewing system, the control lever can be activated by the craft handling crew
from inside the craft.
2) Lowering system, the control lever can be activated by the carft handling crew
from inside the craft.

5. ELECTRIC PARTS

5.1 ELECTRIC MOTORS

The electric motors drive directly the load via gear train. The motors are of
the type B5, isolation class F, enclosure IP56. The motors are of the 4 poles
type, allowing one speed for hoisting. The motors contain a standby heating
element connected to the starter panel on the AC220V circuit.
The electric motor for slewing is mounted in the hydraulic power unit directly
driving the pump.

5.2 STARTER PANEL

The stater panel is executed for mounting on deck and is of the enclosing
class IP23. The following controls/alarms are situated on the starter panel:
- MAIN POWER SWITCH, with this switch the electric supply to the winch motor can
be controlled. The electric supply to the motor can be controlled by means of
the emergency stop or from the ship's control centre.
- EMERGENCY ON-OFF SWITCH, with this switch the electric supply to all electric
motors can be disconnected.

5.3 LIMIT SWITCHES

The limit switches are executed for mounting on deck and are of the enclosure
class IP56. The reference numbers of the switches are :
- Model No. SW-2M-LRL : for slewing
- Model No. SW-2M-LRL-W : for hoisting

6. HYDRAULIC PARTS

6.1 HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT / CONTROL UNIT

The hydraulic power unit is mounted on the davit column. It incorporates an ele-
ctric motor, directly driving the pump. The pump, as well as the control compon-
ents, is located inside the tank.
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

6.2 ACCUMULATOR / PRESSURE CONTROL SWITCH

An accumulator is mounted on the davit, directly driving the hydraulic motor as
soon as the "Cock valve" and the "Hand operated directional control valve" are
actuated. The pressure in the accumulator is controlled by the pressure control
switch and visualised by the build-on manometer. The pressure control starts and
stops the electric motor at pressures as shown on the hydraulic diagram.
For safety reasons a pressure relief valve is incorporated in the system.
An additional cock valve(for discharge purposes) is added.

6.3 HYDRAULIC MOTOR

The hydraulic motor is the actuator of the "stored power" slewing mechanism.
It is located on the slewing gear unit, on the davit colum. The motor is of the
low speed/high torque type allowing speeds from 0 to maximum required.

7. WINCH SYSTEM

7.1 BASIC DESCRIPTION OF RESCUE BOAT / LIFE RAFT HANDLING WINCH

7.1.1 DRUM
To coil, accommodate, or unwind the necessary wire rope falls, the winch is
equipped with a drum, the shaft of which is being supported in roller type
bearings.

7.1.2 SPEED REDUCER GEAR

The speed reducer gear employs an appropriate a conventional gear train.

7.1.3 SAFETY GEAR (CENTRIFUGAL BRAKE)

To the purpose of gravity lowering, the winch includes a governor brake for
keeping the lowering speed within permissible limits.

7.1.4 BRAKE GEAR(STOP BRAKE)

To the purpose of holding the survival craft in any position a freewheel coupl-
ing has been installed. By lifting the brake lever a spindle type axial mechan-
ism opens the coupling between the gear train and this freewheel coupling; low-
ering due to gravity with a speed governed by the safety gear is possible.
By releasing the brake lever, the lever drops back to the neutral position;the
coupling between the gear train and assistance in positioning the brake lever
in the neutral position may be required, but pushing the lever downwards with
high force is not allowed since this will cause excessive wear in the bearings
of the spindle type axial mechanism.
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

7.1.5 MOTOR POWER UNIT

The motor power unit is represented by a squirrel cage electric motor, creating
the possibility of hoisting the survival craft with a speed of minimum 18 m/min
Lowering by means of this motor is not possible.

7.1.6 MANUAL CRANKING GEAR

Apart from hoisting the load by motor power, there is also back-kick proof man-
ual hoisting gear, enable the craft to be recovered by manual cranking as need
be. To that purpose the hand crank provided with the system has to be inserted
on squared extension shaft of the winch and rotated as long as necessary.
If not required, the crank handle should be stowed in its supports on the winch
If inserted the electric motor can not be activated. During gravity lowering
the hand crank will not rotate, but nevertheless it should be in its stowage
supports. Since electrical lowering gear has been installed. Lifting the winch
brake lever and turning the drum manually is required for this procedure.

7.2 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF RESCUE BOAT / LIFE RAFT HANDLING WINCH

7.2.1 HOISTING BY ELECTRIC POWER

Electric motor rotation enacted by actuation of the push button on the control
box results in a corresponding drum rotation. Lifting the brake lever at the
same time is not allowed, since this makes hoisting impossible.

7.2.2 LOWERING BY GRAVITY

For the purpose of lowering the load by gravity, the coupling is released by
lifting its control lever, which also permits the spindle mechanism to rotate.
As a result: the load is no longer restrained by the free wheel coupling and
the drum is free to pay out the load. For safety reasons the design is such
that in case of discontinuing the lifting of the lever the descent of the sur-
vival craft is stopped immediately; the design is of the "dead-man" type.

7.2.3 HOISTING BY MANUAL HANDLE

Manual crank rotation coincide with the corresponding drum rotation, with the
crank engaged on the gear shaft. For the purpose of inserting the hand crank,
the safety device actuator screening the shaft entry has to be turned aside,
which prevents at the same time the operation of the electric motor.

7.2.4 LOWERING WITH THE MANUAL LOWERING FACILITY ONLY WITH NO LOAD ON THE DAVIT
SYSTEM
Manual lowering is possible by turning of the drum by handle or unwinding
wheel. When the unloaded hook has to be lowered, it will not be sufficient to
actuate the brake lever only. By lifting the brake lever and turning of the
drum by handle or unwinding wheel manually this procedure is possible.

8. BRAKE SYSTEM OF LAUNCHING APPLIANCE WINCHES

The brake shoe lining should be periodically checked for wear and, on reaching
their minimum permissible thickness following from the accompanying information
sheet, they should be replaced, observing the prescribed properties of the linings
and the rivets.
The period of time between two successive checks depending preponderously on the
frequency and way of operation and other factors; a generally applicable value is
difficult to be prescribed. As a procedures or every year, whichever occurs
earlier; an optimum interval will however be shown by own experience of trial and
error.
At the occasion of the above checking, the condition of the other brake parts
should be inspected as well and measures taken as appropriate.

10. MAINTENANCE

10.1 GENERAL MAINTENANCE

10.1.1 GREASE SCHEME
All grease point on the davit and winch as shown on the lubrication diagram,
should be lubricated by a grease gun not less frequently than every six weeks.
The oil level of winch gear case should be frquently checked and other points
calling for special attention are mentioned later on.
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

10.1.2 LUBRICATION
Careless painting is the most frequent source of trouble with gravit davits.
When painting, it is essential to ensure that no paint is applied to lubrica-
ting points or bearing or any moving parts due to impede their free movement.

10.1.3 DAVITS
- All sheaves and rollers must be thoroughly greased and rotated freely.
- Turnbuckles, hooks, floting block sheaves, swivel and small moving parts must
be free from paint and well greased.

10.2 WINCH MAINTENANCE

10.2.1 LUBRICATION
The gear case must be kept filled to correct level with non-freezing oil.
Oil level must be checked every six(6) weeks by visual checking of oil gauge.
If oil level is below chisel mark, extra oil must be added via the oil filter
plug situated in the top cover until the correct level is obtained.
Ensure oil plugs are fully tightened after use.

10.2.2 BRAKE LINING

The band brake lining is secured in the gear case.
The lining should be inspected annually and if lining has been worn down to
within 1mm of the rivet heads, it should be replaced.
Never let the lining wear down to the rivet head as this will cause damage to
the steel plate half of the clutch with subsequent rapid wear of the lining.

10.3 WIRE ROPE

10.3.1 WIRE SECURING DEVICE
Boat fall wire end to be secured certainly by clamping bolts as described as
below.
SMT-MNL-RB&LRD

10.3.2 WIRE ROPE

- Renew the wire rope in the following cases.
 When more than 10% of the strands have been cut in one twist of the rope.
 When decrease in diameter has been 7% of the nominal diameter of rope.
 When the rope has knifed.
 When considerable deformation or corrosion has been found on the rope.
- Fully greased wire rope periodically will be protected from corrosion.

11. RECOMMENDED LUBRICANTS

For the recommended oil and grease lubricants, please see the accompanying list
made up in compliance with recommendations by oil companies mentioned therein.
For obvious reasons, the list can not be exhaustive; equivalent products by other
recognised companies are acceptable as well.

Lubricants have been developing unceasingly; it is advisable to consult your

lubricant supplier, in particular whenever operation at extremes of temperature
should be envisaged.

With respect to the particulars mentioned in the list, your lubricant supplier
will be pleased to assist you in making a choice of the lubricant types optimally
suited to the ship's area navigation.
