John Crane Italia SpA 1. INTRODUCTION

Via Giotto, 3
20053 Muggiò (MI) John Crane manufacture and supply mechanical seals of the highest quality. These are precision-made pieces
of equipment, with sealing faces lapped flat within thousandths of a mm. Every care is taken in their design,

destination to our customer’s satisfaction.

To obtain the optimum performance from our seals, it is important that they are both fitted and operated correctly
in line with our technical literature. It is also important that seals are transported stored, packaged, and handed
correctly from the time of delivery to installation in the equipment.

The following designations are used in this instruction manual to highlight instructions of particular importance:

STORAGE AND TRANSPORTATION NOTE: Refers to special information on how to install or operate the seal most efficiently.

ATTENTION: Refers to special information or instructions directed towards the prevention of damage to the seal
or its surroundings.
MECHANICAL SEALS

Refers to mandatory instructions designed to prevent personal injury or extensive damage to the
seal or its surroundings.

2.TRANSPORTATION 2.2 Receipt

information should be read thoroughly before lifting or handling the seal. The Instruction Manual should

• Equal attention to packaging is needed when transporting used seals and components when parts are
being returned or reconditioning is planned. If a part is damaged in transit, its sealing integrity may be affected.
In many instances the original supply packaging is reusable, and if stored appropriately can be used when
moving used parts. 2.3 Packaging Removal

identification code, and the reason for the supply. Where appropriate, examine the Instruction Manual to determine the location of components; take care that
the tool used does not contact any soft, vulnerable seal parts. In the case of hard parts where contact is likely
or unavoidable, choose an area that is least vulnerable to the function of the part.
If parts have been used, it is the responsibility of the user to ensure that any parts being sent to
a third party have been appropriately decontaminated and have safe-handling instructions ATTENTION: Seal cartridges and assembles can be heavy and often contain hard ceramics which are
vulnerable to damage. Consult the Instruction Manual for guidance on lifting, and examine the

exposed, sensitive components are kept protected

• No sharp edges likely to cause physical injury should exist, but function or processing may have necessitated
them. Check parts before handling and either avoid risk areas, or wear appropriate protection

3. STORAGE 3.2 Long-term Rotating Equipment Storage

• The storage of elastomers should meet the requirements of ISO.2230, which include exclusion from sunlight • The advice contained in item 3.1, for the shelf storage of seals and components, also applies to items

away from any direct source of heat. Many seal assemblies include elastomers and thus these same
recommendations must apply. • In the case of cartridges seal assemblies that have been used or dismantled prior to storage, it is
recommended they are statically tested prior to reinstallation. For further advice consult John Crane.
• With the exception of elast omers, seal components will have an indefinite shelf life. Elastomeric materials,
however, will deteriorate with time and it is recommended all except Fluoroelastomers are replaced after 2 NOTE: Should re-assembly of a gas seal(s) be necessary the lubricant used on the dynamic elastomers

• It is recommended seal storage is carried out in the same manner as supplied. Some metallic shaft and gland
plate components may be stored attached to the rotating equipment, but attention to cleanliness, moisture and
corrosion protection still applies. For advice contact John Crane.

• All connections in the seal componentry must be plugged or sealed.
• The seal chamber and parts must be flushed, cleaned and completely dried afterwards. The internals of the
rotating equipment must also be properly drained, cleaned and dried with protective covers and plugs fitted

rotation of normal operation, to ensure flexibility of parts is maintained. Gas Seals should only be rotated in
the direction of the arrow marked on the gland plate.
ATTENTION: Dual pressurised gas seals should NOT be flushed with fluid. The seal may be “blown through”
or dried with nitrogen or instrument air to ensure the seal is dry and free from debris.
NOTE: If it is not practical to rotate the shaft monthly it should be rotated slowly (by hand if possible),
before commissioning.
Ensure the equipment is clean, dry and that the seal chamber and seal are both at atmospheric
pressure, before removing the seal drain plug to blow through the seal.
If the seal assembly has been stored on the equipment for more than 1 year and is a pusher design (API
682/ISO 21049 Type A) the seal head must be axially moved before commissioning/operation to ensure it

NOTE: For concentric seal designs or when the sleeve drive and location does not include a collar and
set screws, alternative ways of axially flexing the seal must be considered.

• With dual pressurised seal s that have been stored for some period it is recommended the assembly is
statically tested with its barrier fluid at its normal barrier pressure before the equipment is put into service.
