Year 6 Block 1 Curriculum Overview

Reminders:
Daily reading for at least 20 minutes.

Maths: In this Block, Year 6 students will investigate place value and number properties, as well as read, write, order,
and compare numbers, as well as determine digit values. Additionally, children will investigate negative numbers,
count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers through zero, and round any number up
to 1,000,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, 100,000, 1,000,000, and 10,000,000. Children will develop mental
and written strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing large numbers.

Science: In the first block Year 6 will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. Children will recognise that
living things can be grouped in a variety of ways; living things are classified into broad groups according to common
observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals.

Physical Education: Pupils will demonstrate and consolidate the basic actions of travelling, jumping and landing,
transferring of weight, balancing, rolling and turning on the floor. Students will evaluate and assess movements to
improve sequences.

Languages:
French: In block 1, students will be taught vocabularies related to greetings ( formal and informal way) , Classroom
objects , Seasons and Weather.

English (Reading and Writing): This block, we'll use
Francesca Sanna's The Journey to practise narrative
writing and review grammar. We'll also practise
Book Talk with the reading rainbow. This picture
book provides young readers with a powerful and
moving look at migration. The story, told through the
eyes of a young girl, explores the unimaginable
choices that a mother and her two children must
make in order to flee war.
Key Vocabulary:
Commas, figurative language passive verbs, semi-
colons, colons, dashes, perfect form of verbs (time
and cause relationship), expanded noun phrase and
colon to introduce a list.
Humanities: In this unit, children will explore the
continents of North America, and the countries that
form them. They will explore some of the contrasting
regions of the Americans, finding out about landscape,
climate, time zones and locations of each area.

human impact, longitude, latitude, Tropic of Cancer,

Drama: Children continues to learn of characters Topic:

Library: Children will relate how the author's

Art and Design:
Children will focus on their drawing skills while
investigating colour ,tone and composition

Computing: WE ARE APP PLANNERS – The children will
develop an awareness of the capabilities of
smartphones. In the process they will also be learning to
use the App Inventor program to create simple apps.

Music
The learning in this unit is focused around Happy’, song where the lessons present an integrated approach to games,
the dimensions of music, singing and playing percussion instruments including the recorder.
