Section A [45 marks]

Answer all questions in this section.

1. The following data show the masses, in kg, of fish caught by 25 fishermen on a particular day:
10 8 7 4 4 18 9 14 17 11 5
4 5 7 10 12 14 10 9 29 7 6
5 20 15
(a) Construct a stem-and-leaf diagram for the data. [2 marks]
(b) Determine the median, mean and standard deviation of the data. [6 marks]
Hence, find the Pearson coefficient of skewness and comment on the shape of the distribution.
[3 marks]

2. Vivian visits her local gym regularly. After each visit she chooses one item to eat from the gym’s
café. This could be an apple, a banana or a piece of cake. She chooses the item independently each time.
The probability that Vivian chooses each of these items on any visit is given by;
P(Apple) = 0.2 P(Banana) = 0.35 P(Cake) = 0.45
For any four randomly selected visits to the gym, find the probability that Vivian chooses:
(a) at least one banana. [2 marks]
(b) the same item each time. [2 marks]
(c) apple twice and cake twice. [3 marks]

3. Pepsi-cola is sold in bottles of two sizes – standard and large. For each size, the content, in litres, of
a randomly chosen bottle is normally distributed with mean and standard deviation as given in the table.
Mean Standard deviation
Standard bottle 0.76 0.008
Large bottle 1.01 0.009
(a) Show, that the probability that a randomly chosen standard bottle contains less than 0.75 litres is
0.1056. [2 marks]
(b) Find the probability that a box of 10 randomly standard bottles contains at least three bottles whose
contents are each less than 0.75 litres. [3 marks]
(c) Find the probability that there is more cola in four randomly chosen standard bottles than in three
randomly chosen large bottle. [3 marks]

4. A random sample of 200 data is taken from a normal population with a variance of 50. Determine
the value of h if the symmetric h% confidence interval for the population mean is (7.267, 9.843).
[5 marks]

5. The number of working hours per week of employees in a company is modelled by a normal
distribution with mean of 34 hours and a standard deviation of 4.5 hours. The manager claims that the
mean working hours per week of the company’s employees has increased. A random sample of 30
employees in the company was found to have mean working hours per week of 36.2 hours.
Carry out a hypothesis test at the 2.5% significance level to investigate the manager’s claim. [6 marks]

6. A company has introduced a new brand product. The marketing manager wants to know whether the
preference for the brand is distributed independent of the consumer’s education level. The survey of a
sample of 400 consumers gave the following results.
Illiterates Literates High School Graduate
Bought new brand 50 55 45 60
Did not buy new brand 30 55 65 40
Determine whether the preference for the brand is independent of the consumer’s education level at
5 % significance level. [8 marks]

Section B [15 marks]

Answer one question only in this section.

7. (a) (i) Faizal has a keen fascination with rabbits that live on Gaya Island, in particular the lengths of
their ears. The mean length of a rabbit’s ear on Gaya Island is  cm. He takes a random sample of 40
rabbits and finds that a 90% confidence interval for  is 8.3 cm to 9.9 cm. Using the same sample, find
a 99% confidence interval for . [6 marks]

(ii) Faizal wants to find a confidence interval for  with a width of 1.28 cm. Find the confidence
level that Faizal should use. [4 marks]

(iii) Faizal takes 200 random samples and calculate a 95% confidence interval for each one. How
many of the confidence intervals do not contain the true population mean, . [1 mark]

(b) A spinner has 8 sectors labelled 1 to 8. Siva spins the spinner n times and it lands on the number ‘7’
35 times. An % confidence interval for the true probability of landing on the number ‘7’ is
0.1059 < p < 0.1741. Find the value of . [4 marks]

8. (a) In the context of hypothesis testing, explain the terms critical region and critical value.
[2 marks]

(b) The table below shows the probabilities for difference values that X ~ B(40, 0.8) can take
x P(X = x)
40 0.000133
39 0.001329
38 0.006480
37 0.020520
36 0.047452
A test of the null hypothesis H0: p = 0.8 against the alternative hypothesis H1: p > 0.8 is carried out for
the random variable X ~ B (40, p).
(i) Using a 5% level of significance, find the values of X which would lead to the rejection of the null
hypothesis. [4 marks]

A second test is carried out with the same null hypothesis against the alternative hypothesis H1: p ≠ 0.8.
(ii) Given that x = 38 is a critical value, find the minimum level of significance for the test. [3 marks]

(c) The population mean of the random variable X ~ N (, 52) is being tested using a null hypothesis
H0:  = p against the alternative hypothesis H1:  ≠ p. A random sample of 16 observations is taken
from the population and the sample mean is calculated as 𝑋̅ = 𝑠. There is insufficient evidence to reject
the null hypothesis using a 5% significance level.
(i) when p = 30, find the range of values s. [4 marks]
(ii) when s = 25, find the range of values for p. [2 marks]
